Interested to see pictures of your warmoth maple fretboard necks without finish, but with heavy use.

I know that no finish is a big no-no and will void one's warranty, but I want to see what some authentic wear looks like on an unfinished neck that's seen some heavy use.

so let's see 'em!

from what i've heard the difference between a finished maple neck with heavy use and UNfinished maple neck with heavy use is huge. the unfinished neck will generally just look more dirty. not necessarily worn in spots, but just kind of dirty all around. a finished maple neck with heavy use will have spots worn into the fretboard, and is the classic look that can be seen on tons of vintage and relic guitars.

max's guitar was a good example. it definitely had worn spots, but since the neck was completely unfinished it was more just kind of dark maple. on the other hand, necks that had a finish and had it worn through get really obvious grooves in the neck with no finish on them. hopefully max will post his picture of his neck. i know its on this forum somewhere, but i can't remember what the thread was called...

I have to scrape my neck off every many months.  :laughing7:

Max always put some dirt on his hands before playing... its the new way of relicing a guitar..

He puts dirt on his back too, but doesn't play guitar with that.  What a weird question.   :icon_scratch:

LOL....

Any other great pics of that neck, Max?  So no finish at all on it?  Just hand oils/dirt?

I've got a Warmoth neck incoming today that I'm planning on putting just Birchwood Casey Sealer/Filler on.  This will seal the wood from moisture, etc, but when knocked back with 0000 steel wool, should feel like raw wood.  It'll also bring out the grain (this one has some light flaming on it) and give a little warmth to the color.

And since it will have the texture of raw wood, it should be able to get all dirty and worn in looking in just a few months, depending on how much I'm playing it.

If the Sealer/Filler doesn't look or feel like enough, I'll do a thin coat of Tru-Oil on it to make sure the wood is completely sealed.

what size frets you have on that tele neck?  Looks like you get alot of finger/fretboard contact.  I'm worried that won't happen w/ the neck I got yesterday from Warmoth-- those 6100's are huge!  I wonder how much fingerboard wear I can expect with frets that big...

I wouldn't worry about your fingers not making contact with the fretboard.  I've got 6150s on a bass, though not as tall, it still has bass strings on it.  It's a Rosewood fretboard, and I still have to de-crud it every so often.

I had them put stainless steel 6100s on my first Warmoth neck, and I was surprised, too. I knew they'd be big, but damn! They're the railroad ties I've always wanted. I have several Warmoth necks with that size installed now and don't think I'll ever change. I like the feeling of being in complete control of the string. As for wear, I don't know. All mine are either SS or "gold", so they're very hard and don't wear like regular nickel/steel frets do. But, the larger size does buy you some time.

I have the 6130's (gibson size, low & wide) on my main tele with Warmoth's 10-16' radius and love that setup.  Comfy for chording and leads, gettin' some nice fretboard wear (thin coat of satin spray nitro on it).  But I'm always looking to slightly change what works for me, so I don't have identical necks.  This new neck I got is the same exact specs (radius, nut width, back contour, etc.) but with the railroad tie 6100's.  So far, action is low, neck is straight and the 6100's should last a long time before needing a level/crown or a refret (probably not in my lifetime!)

You got some Lemon Oil on atleast one of them, right?
Ya, I put a bit of lemon oil on the VW neck right after I got it in '99. But never put anything on the other one on my stratocoustic...

Pros:  Feels great.  Very smooth.

Cons:  Darkens from oils from hands quite easily
can feel dirty if not kept clean
         voids a W warranty
higher possibilty of not staying stable
         suceptible to fungus

and if there is a figuring in the maple, it won't be as visible, while a finish will enhance the figuring...
