I did a search and did not find any post covering this. If I'm being redundent, Sorry.
I'm always afraid of damaging the finish when I change pickups.
I've never really hurt a guitar but I have come smokin' close a couple of times.
Recently my wife bought a product from QVC that seems to be the perfect cover for my soldering projects.
Sold as: Prepology Multi-function Silicone Liner Item # K31046
It is a fiberglass reinforced silicone mat. Food grade silicone on 2 sides of a fiberglass mat
It is designed to line ovens & cookie sheets, and I suppose 1100 other uses around the kitchen.
It is a flexible, stick resistant surface, good to 450 degrees F.
As a soldering aid it is outstanding! At only .0175" thick it will lay over a guitar like a piece of cloth and protect it like nothing I've tried before. I put a piece of flannel between the body and the mat as a precaution, but doubt that it is necessary.
Solder drops just bead up and roll away. It's also strong enough to protect against an accidentlly dropped screwdriver or pickup.
At 70"x 24" there's enough to line your oven & still cover a couple of guitars. Or I think there's enough to split with a friend if you wanted to.
It cuts with scissors, so you can easily cut a hole for control access and completely cover the guitar.
Here's a pic taken when I put the RoadHouse pickups in my partsdrawer tele.
Since then I have gotten a larger piece and will completely cover the body on future changes.

I'm sure that there are other places that sell this product. Especially for those of you that live in a larger city.
I just got lucky when my wife had some left over & let me try it out. So here's a link to QVC if you want to go that route. http://www.qvc.com/qic/qvcapp.aspx/view.2/app.detail/params.item.K31046.desc.Prepology-70x24-MultiFunction-Customizable-Silicone-Liner
I hope that some one finds this useful.
