what is a good paint to use to finish my strat body. I cant really afford the 15 dollar can at re ranch so i was curious to know what paint you guys used if you didn't use re ranch

was going to shoot black or silver, was trying to stay away from enamel, heard it takes forever to dry

Acrylic lacquer is your best option. Duplicolor makes a filler/primer that you can use along with their Truck, Van, & SUV colors for $6/can. You can use their clear coat lacquer also, but I like to use Spray Max 2K urethane clear instead for under $20/can at http://www.repaintsupply.com/pd_2_part_2k_aerosol.cfm

Just finished a guitar project using Duplicolor and Spray Max...

In general, you've got to spend at least $50 / 75 bucks to get a decent finish, no matter what you do. One of the simplest ways is to use oil-based stains like minwax and then use Deft brand clear from home depot over the top of that. Can get great results with patience.

Practically speaking you can use just about any paint that you can wet sand, then top off with acrylic clear coat.  It may not look super professional, but it will look serviceable and wear well.

Whatever you try I would suggest doing a test run on some scrap material.  Yes, you may have to spend a few bucks more, but this will be much cheaper than the waste and added expense of having to re-do the entire job.
