I'm thinking of putting a set of PAF Pros into my next Warmoth build: Basswood soloist body, Maple top, Maple neck & a floyd.

I wonder how a set of these PUs would sound in such a guitar, as I'm not familiar with them.

I had one in the bridge position of my Ibanez, and I thought it sounded kind'a thin. I think it makes a very good neck pickup though.

Steve Vai got amazing tone back in the mid to late '80s with the PAF Pro.

I always really liked Paul Gilbert's tone on some of this albums & he did use a PAF Pro. It sounded like a thicker more midy PAF to me. That's why I was thinking of it. I want a warm PAF tone but with more tightness & a tad more mids.

I've never liked Vai's tone. Too thin & lifeless. I think that's more to do with his amp & whole setup than just his PUs.

Pauls tone has some meat to it, retains that warm timber & is still tighter than a PAF.

I'm just really trying to think what goes best with a basswood body/maple neck guitar.

Might I suggest the Bare Knuckle Mule?

I am not familiar with the Mule, but will definitely check it out. Thanks for the info.  :headbang:

I do know that bareknuckle makes a VHII model that sounded AMAZING in a sound clip that Steve Steves did for them.

I have owned my bare knuckle crawler humbucker for a week now, and it litteraly blows everything i've ever heard away!
They are a bit expensive, but worth every penny (or cent if u want)

The mule in a 70's Gibson Les Paul Goldtop

A Mule in a warmoth soloist built in 1998. The body is Honduras Mahogany, with a mahogany w/brazilian rosewood.

Youtube clips does not justify sound clips at all - and I havent heard the mule in real life - but my experience from buying my Bare Knuckle Crawler is that it sounds WAY better than in any souondclips I've heard.

You can choose between ceramic and alinco magnets. The ceramic delivers alot more "punch" than the alinco. The alinco is better for clean tones, with a bit fatter sound.

I'm thinking about replacing my Gibson Burst Bucker Pro's in my les paul with Bare Knuckle Mules, and the pickups in my candy tangerine warmoth with Bare Knuckle Nailbombs.

Vai's tone with David Lee Roth was to die for.  It changed after that (and so did the pickups he uses).

I think he was using alder guitars w/ Diamrzio X2Ns during that period along with vintage marshalls. I really do like that ear's tone as well. Afterwards, it got really thin & solid state sounding.
