Paddle head question (now with mockups)

You are correct about the scale for each. This is an issue since I would want 25.5" if I go with a jag style. There is a workaround however should I go with the jag. I am looking into other offsets and at this time have not decided which.

I agree, a J-Bass guitar would be awesome. Max did a mock up once of such a monster. It looked great. I have thought about that ever since.

If the pocket is physically compatible you can always have W leave the bridge route off a jaguar, and place it yourself. Easier if you're using a flatmount bridge.

Yeah. I don't know if placing the bridge would be easier than ordering a Jazzmaster without the top control route. Like the "split JM". Just order different pickup routes.

I also may outsource it. I know many builders and I may also go with a different offset.

I came across this build thought it might help.

:sign13: Are some new PUPS going on this?

Thanks Leo. I did see that as I was putting this together. Nice build.

As for pups.... Well we will see. I have something in mind but sourcing a few of the parts is proving difficult. I may have to make what I want and it's a bit of an undertaking. But that being said, I also have something else that is totally new that may make it onto this project. Shhh..... :icon_thumright:

Here's some shots for direct comparison to a strat

Wow. Thanks for posting those pics. That's helpful. I am really diggin' the project idea now. I talked to W today and they said no problem to leave the tuner holes out. "Just put it in the notes at the end."

Oh and the neck comes with a 1 3/4 nut width which I would like to have as well.

Thanks again Trevor!

I don't dislike the jazzmaster shape, its kinda cool. But I think it would have been improved with a full size upper horn.  But placing a flatmount bridge is pretty simple. I think I'd consider a jaguar with a displaced bridge over a jazzmaster if its doable.

When i wrote that on nyquil w fluid in my ears, I had it in my head that the jag/stang had a more concave side to the horn like a strat.

I've ordered the neck. 65' twelve, no tuners, standard 6 string nut, Q-sawn maple / pau-ferro, 6150 frets. Now to get on with the rest of the project.

It's been interesting. As I look for how I want to do this project, I have found that it does exist only not on one guitar. Not that I have found anyway. It turns out that Fender did a six string guitar with parts from the 12 string and made a "Custom" or "Maverick". This is close to what I wanted to do but with a Jag body @ 25.5" scale.

I have the found the parts needed for the pickups. The covers are hard to come by. I will be making all other pickup parts. A fellow winder in Europe is sending me some covers for my project. I have hopes of getting many and being able to offer them.

Here is a mockup of the project with a few color options. The green version would actually be a bit darker and metallic. I am sure there will be many who think this a rather ugly concept but it's cool to me. I'm also considering a 3 pickup version.

Finish votes and comments welcome.

I love the concept regardless of the color (they all look cool to me).  The great thing will be that once you're done you'll have something entirely unique and special...

until everybody else decides to copy it.

It's going to be awesome. I personally like all the colors. Have fun deciding!

Btw, you probably won't have room for the string retainer between the nut and the first tuner- I didn't!  Also- thought about offsetting the tuners ?

Thanks! Yes, I love all the colors. It seems to be down to two of them. I will know when the time comes... I hope. I don't know if the string retainer will go on or not. I am thinking there will be a little more room since the first tuners will be moved out slightly. I did think about offsetting one side of tuners from the other. I forgot to do a mock up though. I need to.

There will also be a unique decal between the tuners. I so far have never put a decal on any of my headstocks. Needless to say it won't be and "F" decal. It is going to be something tied to this particular geographic location.. :icon_tongue:

EDIT* Oh yeah, typically the high and low E don't even go through the retainer on these. So there probably won't be enough room..

I'd simplify he control scheme a bit. Get rid of the switch and pots on the upper horn altogether, and trade the slide switches on the lower horn with a toggle. Then, use a one-piece pickguard like a Jazzmaster. The toggle should select one pickup or the other, or both. Volume and tone controls are "masters". That way, there's nothing to think about. No matter what you're doing, volume and tone are in the same place. Pickup selector, same way. Just hammer it as necessary.

I know it looks cool to have 80 bajillion controls on your guitar, but unless you're only 12 years old and not playing in a band, that sort of thing gets tiring real fast due to its impracticality in real life.

Very cool. I'm digging the metallic green. Do that with some locking tuners instead of the vintage tuners and string retainer and I think you've got a winner.

Excellent!  Good luck with it, Ken.  And I'll counter Cagey: I think on this the upper horn controls might be pretty useful.  Certainly, if you did a 12 string version, it would be cool to have the rhythm circuit.

This project seems like a lot of fun, I need to remember to check it out when it's done
