P-Bass/J-Bass route

On a bass that would have a pickguard like a P-Bass or J-bass, could a combination route be done for both J-Bass and P-Bass style pickups in the neck position?  It could accomodate either, and the pickguard would cover the unused routed portion.  If I wanted a P/J combo bass, I put a P-bass pickup and routed pickguard on it.  If I wanted the J-Bass neck pickup back, I put the J-Bass pickup and pickguard back on.

Like this:

And it could be used with either of these pickguards, depending on the pickup.

There may be an option to do a 'swimming pool' route, like on some strats.  Dunno, never looked into it.....

True, and I knew that would come up.  But with a Strat, and the swimming pool route, they [pickups] ultimately mount to the pickguard, so the route is unimportant as long as there's no clearance issues.  With basses though, the pickup mounts to the wood, and the route is more or less a jig that marks where you drill for the mounting screws.  With this route, there is enough taken away to accomodate both, but still enough left that the pickup is craddled by the body.

If you were going to overlay for a dual pickup config with pickguard, it would make more since to use a '51 P-bass pickup than route than a J-bass route.

Perhaps, but preferences aside, the J-Bass pickup in the neck is far more popular than the '51 P-Bass pickup, the '51 P-Bass pickup, as you've shown on your J-Bass, fits in the J-Bass route, and the '51 P Bass, even with a pickguard, is behind the pickguard and not surrounded by it like a P or J-Bass.  Even with my suggested routing, the '51 P-Bass pickup would fit, only to require a 3rd pickguard option.

I'm thinking it might be possible, but don't quote me on that.  It would certainly be non-returnable!

For what I can see in the draw, the P route in the pickguard would be much close of the final line of the p.g.
Beside it's a good idea, would have to be upgrade a little in that way, then I think warmoth SHALL put it but NOT ON NICE FIGURED WOODS!!  :laughing7:

That's Warmoth's placement straight from their website.
So might not be the 1mm to the end line as I thought  :laughing7:

BTW, is it a pickguard routing option to get the truss-rod adjustment dimple exposed to match the body rout on Warmoth Construction bass necks w/ t-rod adjustment on the body end?  It would make adjustments possible w/out pickguard removal and stringing/re-stringing.  It might be a moot point anyway, because I haven't had to adjust it yet.  It had the right amount of relief in it already.  How'd ya'll do that?
