I have some overlap with projects that was unplanned. The current build started while I was waiting on the neck for my Scandinavian / German heritage Tele project. The engraver has some time open while I have the funds  :redflag:. This is a draft of the image I’m going to inlay on the Tele’s neck.

That is ambitious. Any plans on how you will inlay this one?

In any event, I look forward to seeing it.

I would love to try the more traditional large piece method. The neck is fully scalloped like the other one so I may have to use the crushed method. I really want to try using crushed gem stones. Maybe some quarts, amethyst or obsidian. Some interesting colors would be nice. I always have to ask the missus for help with colors, I don’t have the eye for color like she does.

I like the crushed gemstones idea.
The depth and width of the areas where wood is removed will dictate a lot. Crushing the stone to the proper size may damage its’ color properties. I want the material to be recognizable as whatever gem it actually represents. I’m also hoping the gem stone idea will work well.

Perhaps a combination of crushed, actual gemstones and possibly metals. Just some ideas and it might be worth looking at the possibility of coloured glass.

Cool idea...I'll look into those materials

My engraver sent photos of the neck and I'm picking it up after work.

Very attractive. Seems kinda fine for loading up with stones of any type, but maybe I'm not picturing the same thing you are.

Duuuude that's amazing

I just got home from picking up the neck at the engraver’s shop. The photos don’t begin to truly represent the delicate details in this piece of work. The lines are very narrow and the small detailed areas are simply amazing. The “close up” technique used for the photos adds size to the piece that just doesn’t exist. I would need a material ground to the size of talc to fit into these lines.
Photo 3 has a good example of size appearing to be bigger than it is actually. The scale like lines aren’t cut into the surface; they are the walls of craters left after wood was removed. This area looks like a bunch of volcanos viewed from high altitude.
I think this project just went to a modified inlay/paint or stain technique.  Inlay crushed minerals where possible and some sort of coloring medium in the smallest detailed areas.

Thanks, I agree with you there are a lot of minerals that would look good. The crystal group of minerals is what I kind of want to do. Just for the bling and unusual nature of the material as an inlay medium.
