it was not the look I was going for in my application

There's always a next application... must have been a tough call, sending her back. How much do you have to drop on the non returnable options? And what are you going to do now, order a new one exactly the same minus the streak? Me, I would probably end up constantly worrying that, except for the streak, the first neck may have been better than the second one...

Yeah, it was a tough call, but I think it is the right thing to do.  Agreed that the next one might have such a streak in it, as well, but I've received 3 other Warmoth necks that I thought were cosmetically acceptable, so I guess the odds are in my favor that I'll like the next one; it has been ordered.

Cosmetic appearance is one of the ongoing challenges with custom builds.  In my befuddled mind, It can be quite frustrating.  I personally would like to see every customer blown away by every order they receive.  Unfortunately, I know that isn't going to happen.

We can start with a neck blank that looks superbly clean or has a distinct figuration, but by the time it has been cut/sanded down, new layers of wood have been exposed that can hold surprises.  The figuration can change, mineral streaks can appear, etc....  No two pieces are the same.  It is a nature characteristic of the wood and is beautiful to someone.

:laughing8: am I happy (or should you be happy? :p ) that all the 4 projects you worked on with me (one way or another :D ) turned out to be better than expected? ;)

Happy, happy, joy! joy!  I am very thankful Warmoth has such an incredible selection of wood and a building full of craftsmen.  The shop regularly exceeds my expectations which, hopefully, exceed our customers expectations.  I doubt there is a day that goes by I don't find another incredible top or fingerboard that makes me go 'wow!' :icon_thumright:

haha, well, we already discussed my next project, and BOY this will rock my/your world. I'm already having negotiations with another luthier to make me a neck: bocote and pau ferro laminates with maple/bloodwood spacers. too bad W. can't make laminated necks (or CAN they, but they just charge us alot for it?)

I can see that.  I've been blown away by the workmanship, quality, and overall appearance of everything I've received to date from Warmoth, except this particular headstock.  I'm just happy I was able to send it back and get some of my investment back to offset other orders from Warmoth, which you know there are a few.  Further orders speak volumes about how I feel about what I get from the big W.  :icon_thumright:

I hope someone gets this neck from the showcase and loves it to death.  Its replacement does have the same gold frets and abalone inlays.  :icon_biggrin:
