Guys,  I need a half decent violin MIDI patch for use in Reaper.  I'm writing more songs and my current violin patch (IK multimedia sampletank) seriously sucks a$$.

Anyone have any suggestions?  I'm looking for a natural sounding solo violin, ideally with a variety of vibrato options.

I looked into some of the libraries for horns a while back. Some were not just samples but recorded hits, and it was billed - and I thought - "Oh cool, this will sound better than playing samples."  I found it incredibly frustrating - you basically have to compose around a madlib of cliches. There's no good way to search such a library.

The Kontakt stuff is well spoken of both for horns and strings:

(But anyone can make a demo sound good - how it sounds when you or I try to play it is another thing.

I agree that the "Showroom Violin" sounds good but I'd suspect vibrato control is fairly limited.

This one however, seems to have the ability to really control vibrato.

I'd have to watch it again to be sure.
Edit: Yes. Vibrato control seems to be very good.

More demos here:

# 4 of 11 is solo.

Sorry the price is $199 but I think it's worth it if I'd really need a solo Violin.
I may just get it and work my way into needing it.

Oh no ... the gear slut in me has awakened!

Update:
I discovered I had an upgrade discount on this lib. so I bought it yesterday.

But
I'm still wanting the quartet

Because the Stradivari in included with it.

Hey there! For a more realistic solo violin sound in Reaper, you might want to check out some dedicated virtual instrument libraries. Options like "Embertone Joshua Bell Violin" or "Garritan Stradivari Solo Violin" are known for their realistic solo violin sounds and offer various articulations and vibrato options.

Just my opinion on Spitfire 'cause I own Spitfire Symphony Orchestra ...
SSO - especially the strings - are the most unplayable strings I've ever owned.
They sound very good exceptional really ... but the playability is very poor.

It has taken me a lot of secondary manipulation to get SSO strings to sound like a good performance.
Reasons range from unbalanced articulations to no velocity control on some articulations,
odd and thoughtless choices in the programming of the instruments (the nki)
and the inability to get under the wrench and fix problems that would be easily repaired if the nki wasn't locked against user repairs.

Manually - with my fingers on a weighted piano keyboard / Midi Controller - Arturia Keylab 88.
The same way I play in any midi data so my comparison is based on playing other virtual instruments the same way.
For Spitfire Symphony Orchestra I have the 16 drum pads on the KL-88, assigned to midi notes, to do the key switching which is out of range,
below the lowest note of an 88 midi controller. There's an other check mark in the Con column for Spitfire.

I'm comparing to Native Instruments Stradivari Violin (my go to solo violin) or any of the instruments in the Cremona Quartet.
Also Session Strings Pro II - and the Vienna Strings in the Kontakt factory library
(i.e. once I modded the nki to have volume swell on the mod wheel)
also Symphony Essentials stings. Symphony Essentials needed some under the wrench fine tuning also.
These are the relatively newer of my strings libs.

My older go-to for full string sections in Kirk Hunter Diamond. Somewhat tedious key switching but a lot of flexibility inside of each articulation,
and perfect playability if riding the CC11 fader on the controller.
However the Diamond solo violin is far inferior to the NI Stradivari Violin.
I'll still use SSO strings for the sound in some instances but SSO most always needs some tweaking.

I'm patiently waiting for the release of Aaron Venture Infinite Strings
because his Infinite WWinds and Infinite Brass are the most playable instruments I've ever owned.
Exceptional - perfect actually.
No key switching needed. Anything you can imagine can be played with fingers and mod wheel only.
Even trills and rips. Very good legato programming also.

@Steve_Karl thanks I wondered whether they were triggered from Midi programming, a keyboard, or guitar synth.

nki is just a file type, used by NI Kontakt as far as I know.

You're welcome.
yes .nki is the file type for an instrument file, so most users tend to just call the instruments and nki.

Thanks Steve, there certainly seems to be many choices out there that sounds good. Some, of course, will suit the workflow of some more than others.
