Oiling a roasted maple neck

I'm kinda stuck between;

White gloss maple neck with black headstock = will be expensive, but look a lot better
Roasted maple neck with black headstock = I prefer the look of a white gloss neck, but this will be cheaper

Rosewood fretboard on both tho.

I do not have a problem with gloss necks, i dont sweat a lot at all. My gloss necks never gets sticky

I will save tons of money on the roasted option, but I still cant trust that 100% ...

Is it better to seal it in oil ?

First off, I'd always say get what you actually want, so if that's white and black paint, get that. (Strangely I was just idly spec'ing out the exact same thing for a 7/8 Strat.)

Re roasted maple, no, I personally don't think it would be better to oil it. Especially if you're going for Modern construction as they're very trustworthy. If you haven't already got a raw/burnished roasted maple neck then you owe it to yourself to have at least one in your collection - I like gloss too but they are really something special. Better, in terms of feel, to canary and wenge IMHO. If you don't like it, you could always spoil it later.

Lastly, if you go RM, will you paint the headstock yourself? If you want Warmoth to do it and leave the rest raw it might not be that cheap - ask them for a price and let us know!

Yeah I do understand the appeal of the raw neck, and am tempted to try... And for the moment, it would save lots of money... But I cannot help being worry about neck warping even if it's treated  :toothy12:

Actually, I can paint a headstock easily, I've done that with good enough results for my needs myself, so I might go that road

Why on earth would you want to put oil on roasted maple? It does not need any kind of finish whatsoever, and putting a finish on it would only ruin the raw feel.

I have Roasted Maple raw and Bubinga raw. No issues. One character did suggest I Tru Oil the roasted maple to keep the back of the neck clean over time but I have not done so. That would be the only reason. I tend to agree with those in my area who have told me if a neck decides it doesn't want to be a guitar neck there is no finish anywhere that is going to stand in its way. When you consider 94% of the moisture in a roasted maple neck has been baked out of it the chances of it going south are pretty remote.

Raw feels so much better that you never wanna put a finsih on a neck that doesn't need one. That's like wearing a condom to walk with a woman who's had her tubes tied  :icon_biggrin:

All that having been said - majority (not, I must emphasize, consensus) opinion notwithstanding, we are all about building guitars the way we want 'em.  So (art student crimes against nature notwithstanding), getting all judgmental about someone's preferred fingerboard finish is not really in the spirit of our undertaking here, is it?

Of course not. I'm just saying everybody's taste should coincide with mine  :icon_biggrin:

Never gonna happen.  I just don't like, and having tried it numerous times, I feel confident saying I will never like beer.  Not even the Canadian stuff you like.  Molson, is it?

Yech.

Yes, it's Molson's. You're not alone, though. Many people don't like beer. I'd guess it's about 50/50 among my monkeysphere. It's a bitter drink, and that's just not attractive to some.

Personally if someone wants to use tru oil on roasted maple whether it needs it or not I think is down to them.

I've seen some roasted maple necks with tru oil and it does bring out a certain chatoyance compared to no finish.

Yeah, but some people are downright chatouilleux about it!
