Dremels are sort of like Q-tips.

"WARNING! Do NOT insert into ear canal."

Which is PRECISELY why 99.8% of people use them for, pretty much exclusively. After Q-tips, the Dremel has got to be hands down the most abused tool on the planet.

Handy tool, though, especially with that flex shaft.

One thing I'd STRONGLY recommend, even as much as I hate safety equipment, is eye protection. I swear to all that's holy that all Dremel tools are possessed by de debbil. I've never had anything throw so many broken bits, grinding wheel parts, saw blades, buffer fuzz - you name it. The things love to throw stuff. Usually, it's pretty lightweight flotsam and jetsam, but it's sharp and fast so it's no fun to get hit, and your eyes are certainly not up to the task. Cover 'em up.

The ceramic cutoff wheels are itty bitty grenades. I ALWAYS use the fiber reinforced onces instead. (And yeah, I'm as guilty of abusing it as any other dremel owner.)

"Abused"!?!?!  The dremel is the swiss army knife of power tools!  It cuts, it grinds, it carves, it drills, it routs, it slices, it dices, and makes julienne fries, cris-cut fries, curly fries, steak fries out of damn near anything.

If it weren't for the aforementioned need (seriously: don't go near a dremel without it) of eye protection & speeding particles of whatever you're cutting, I'd use my dremel a lot more than I already do. 

I don't abuse it, I simply do my best to ensure it fulfills its destiny as the Wonder Tool.

I've worn Eyeglasses since I was five, so now I alway get the hi impact polycarbonate lenses.

I had the unfortunate experience twice in my youth, once was a piece of helicoil from a stripped screw,

The other I blindsided my self on a piece of PT 2x4, tearing my cornea, and that time I was wearing safety glasses.

The 2x4 pushed them out of the way.

I know safety glasses aren't a panacea, and I have a wealth of stories involving getting hurt because of safety equipment. But, it's still a good idea to use the stuff as long as it doesn't create a bigger hazard than what you're trying to protect against. Kinda like seatbelts - everybody knows a story of somebody getting seriously injured or killed by wearing them, but the overwhelming evidence is that they save lives. Chat up an EMT one time, and (s)he'll tell you million stories that'll have you installing seatbelts on dining room chairs, never mind going without them in a vehicle.

I tend to favor the vented goggles as they keep particles from flying around into my eyes.  Whenever I route, I tend to put on coveralls 'cause I don't like getting sawdust down my shirt.

I wear a face shield, as I find them to afford more protection and are easier to deal with than safety glasses. Effective, inexpensive, and easy to use, especially if you wear prescription glasses as I do. For some reason, I find myself hitting my head a lot when I wear safety glasses. Not sure why, just something I noticed. For some stupid reason, my head turns into an impact magnet when I have safety glasses on.
