Northern vs Swamp ash

In the "body wood option" page, there is two types of ash: swamp ash and northern ash. I have read that come from the same tree cultivated in different places, but generally northern ash is heavier while swamp is lighter.
If I see in the showcase the ash is always called swamp ash, but the weight is a lot of different. Is it possible that Warmoth called all the ash swamp ash but the heavier one is northern ash?

Thanks

Tough to say, but I'd trust them to identify it correctly. Weight isn't really an indicator of origin. Swamp ash can be heavy, too. It's only the first 6' - 8' of the trunk that's light, assuming it was actually grown in a swamp. The rest of the tree is as dense as you'd get if it were grown anywhere else.

mhhh, I have send a email to them, but I don't have still received answer. If they indentify it correctly, means that is no longer available..

+1 for Cagey  I've built several from swamp ash cores and the weight is all over the map .  It is easy to work with and takes a finish well , great tone.

John Cochran send me and e-mail and tell me that is possible to have hard ash at same price of swamp ash... My fear is that I can't know the weight of the body... mhhh

Now I have understand. John have send another mail. The heavier on showcase is hard ash, and the lighter is swamp ash, as I thought. ;)

there are multiple species of Ash that grow here in North America. Common names include Northern Ash, Black Ash, Green Ash, Pumplin Ash, etc ... There is no species with the common name of Swamp Ash. without specific scientific testing together with a sample of the bark and leaves, it is extremely difficult to know the precise species of Ash you are purchasing from a wood supplier

in the guitar wood industry, Swamp Ash is a marketing term for 'light weight' Ash and is typically wood from several of the different Ash species

furniture makes want wood of a consistent heavy density, as this has the best properties for their needs. they pay more for the heavier graded wood, guaranteeing them thay they won't be spending money on 'punk Ash' that is unusable

guitar builders want wood of a consistent maximum density where lighter is better, as this is a feature that their customers demand. they pay more for the lighter graded wood, guaranteeing them that they won't be spending money on 'Northern Ash' that is too heavy for what their customers demand

the wood companies sell to both industries what their market demands, and sort specific to the needs of each market

instrument makes answer to their customers ... and because customers are always right (even if they are quite uninformed at times) ... Swamp Ash rules for guitar body making

all the best,

R
