None Fine Tuner Floyd Rose Build

Here are the first photos...

In the out of the box thread it was mentioned about the recess for the NFT Floyd looking a little long. Here is a shot of the NFT Floyd mounted on the posts screwed into the bushings with the low E moved back to its full range. It can be seen that this gives the needed clearance even at full range.

In the out of box thread Rgand and Bagman67 asked about and suggested what might be done with the neck for finishing. I had planned on plain tru-oil but decided to experiment a little.

Here are two shots of the neck after a very diluted application of Birchwood Casey Walnut stain. Very subtle. The colour on the towel is from a previous job.

Here is a shot of the neck with a couple of coats of shellac taken with flash so looks darker than in daylight. Finishing on the neck after this will be tru-oil

Continuing with the body finish...

Here is a shot of the back of the body after one application of tru-oil mixed with oil paint and white spirit (US term mineral spirit)

And the final photo for today which brings progress up to date.

The front of the body after the second application of colour, this time a mix of the artists oil paint and  tru-oil from a freshly opened bottle.

That's a nice shade of red. With the neck you have, it'll be spectacular.

Thanks, I need to build up another couple of layers or so of the oil paint and tru-oil mix and then will continue with just tru-oil.

The paint is Winsor and Newton, Deep Cadmium Red, artist grade. I have not done any artwork for years but this might have rekindled an old passion...

Artists paints can have some pretty good colors. That does look good. Cadmium red is what I used to paint the zero on my telecaster, but that was acrylic artists paint.

I remember the zero on your Tele...

Lots of colors available you could spend a fortune on a complete range. Of course, they can be mixed...

That is sharp. I didn't expect the red to show up, after seeing the base color you were working on. Thought it was just going to get darker. But, I like the red a lot, and it'll go well with that neck.

I'm REALLY like'n that red! That artist paint sure worked out splendidly. And the finish on the neck did a great job of bringing out the underlying flame. Nicely done!

Thanks for all the positive comments. The first coat was quite thinned down with white/mineral spirit, whereas the 2nd had more pigment in the overall mix ratio I think. To be honest after the 1st one I was pleasantly surprised how the 2nd one built.

The grade of artist colour is the highest quality one they do, so possibly the results with student grade would be different.

That's a GREAT red...I don't even like red, and I really like that red!

I've got one of the other NFT Floyd Rose routes from the original batch as well...
Looking forward to sharing it, but waiting to get the neck, NFT Floyd, and a few more parts.

Between grad school-imposed fiscal austerity and the Satin Black NFT stockout, it might be a while before I'm ready to start a thread.
It will be worth it, though!  :turtle:

Thanks, Zebra.

This one may take a little while as I don't have all the parts yet either. Just getting those things done that can be.

When you do get it done as you say it will be worth the wait.

Nice NFT Floyd Rose Strat Build! Keep it up man!  :yourock:

I am also going to build a HSS NFT Floyd Rose Stratocaster, but only ordered the parts for right now.

I will be Pairing a Warmoth Roasted Maple neck with a MJT Body. Maybe i will do a build thread as well.

cant wait for more Pictures of your build! :)

Hello GT1-Reach.

Thanks it may be a while till I update the thread. I work away a lot so it may be around Easter before I have all of the parts to complete. But I will update it with what I can before then.

Also take a look at this thread that I responded to a couple of days ago.

http://www.unofficialwarmoth.com/index.php?topic=30207.msg425740#msg425740

Can you let me know more details about the body you have ordered from MJT as the fit for the NFT Floyd is quite specific and also if you are not doing a rear rout needs a custom pickguard to fit with the correct rout.

It may be better to get your body from Warmoth and have it drop shipped for MJT to finish to ensure correct fit or at least have the body part of the order put on hold till we know whether it has a likelihood of working or not.

Hey stratamania,

I ordered the mjt body with a non recessed Floyd route.i played a Sambora Stratocaster for years and I am not a recessed Floyd guy. I am not sure how far my body is right now, but I assumed that the normal Floyd rose and NFT have the same specs? Or am I wrong? Of course the NFT is a shorter unit all in all.

When the parts arrive I will create a thread and will inform you about fit and finish.

A fitting Pickguard is also on its way. I am really excited for our builds.

BTW, I will be pairing a suhr Thornbucker+ with 2 zexcoils.
Also have a seymour duncan hyperion hss set from a Ibanez AZ lying around here. Not sure for now in which direction I will go sound and pickup wise. Body is ash.

I think this build might be an adventure  :toothy10:

End of the year I will definitely do a full warmoth govan build.
Year has just begun, but any pickup suggestions for a govan build? Not aiming for a govan sound though, just handling wise. Any suggestions for a nice hsh set?

@ GT1-Reach and anyone else reading this in the future. Please take note and I have emphasized this so no one misses it.

The dimensions of the NFT Floyd and the OFR are different.

What is the same is the post width but that is about all.

You may be lucky if the NFT on a non-recessed body has sufficient width to fit the NFT if it is a normal OFR pickguard, but I can not guarantee that it will be. This is why I posted my comments on that previously. Your worst case scenario might be using the MJT body with an OFR if needed.

For an HSH set, you have a number of options. One possible option would be Bridge, Suhr SSH+, Middle Suhr ML, Neck Suhr SSV. That would be the same I think as what was in the Suhr Guthrie spec.

Better to put these questions in a dedicated thread probably. I will see them.
