NO CELL PHONES WHILE DRIVING, PLEASE!

hannaugh said:
The only time I've ever talked on my cell while driving is if someone is calling me, and I'm not on the freeway, and I think it's an important person calling, I pick up and say "I can't talk, I'm driving, I'll call you back," and then I hang up.  I don't have a hands free device because I don't want to talk on the phone at all when I'm driving, and I tell people that if they call me while I'm in the car, I probably won't pick it up.  Sometimes I check my texts if I'm stopped at a red light, but never when the car is moving, that's just ridiculous.  No call or text is that important that you can't wait until you're stopped.
+1. I get to hang out on my parents. Fun!

It's hard enough dodging the out of control Toyotas!

I don't think we'd hear as much about Toyotas if the U.S. Government weren't part owner of Ford and GM.

That is exactly it. They're going on and on about that accelerator in the Toyota but they seem to be avoiding saying that that exact same part has been being used in a few GM models too. Also, the Japanese are really pushing hard to get the US military base moved out of Okinawa. Don't think for one second that this Toyota deal isn't partly retaliation for that crap too.

+1 The whole scandal is part hoax/part retaliation. My Dad's been a Toyota mechanic for years and to him this thing is 99% crap. And he's never been one to play favourites. Case in point: he bought a Chevy a few months after starting at the Toyota dealership, and then a Dodge a while later. He only recently bought a used Camry to replace my mom's Neon.

Man I so agree, talking on your cellphone while driving is actually illegal here in Quebec, but I still see SO many people still doing it...

I'm with =CB= on this one. If someone was to hit me while talking on the phone they can pretty much rest assured that if the accident didn't cause them any injury that MULLY surely would. We have laws here in Japan about talking and texting while driving. We're allowed hands free though. I think that's the only part of =CB='s post that I don't really agree with. If hands free isn't allowed then they'll also have to make a law saying that you can't talk to anyone sitting in the car with you. Same thing in my opinion. But other than that, yeah, I hate it when I see people talking on their phone or texting while driving. On more than one occasion I've rolled down my window at a stop light and said something to the person messing with their phone. Especially if they had been swerving in front of me before we stopped.

Well the studies show hands free still is a problem, but the hands free law will probably be passed this year

studies also show that the likelihood of getting in a car accident increases hugely for each passenger in the car. I mean, there are all sorts of things that are distractions but at what point do you cap what people can and can't do?

Using a mobile (cell) ohone whilst driving on public roads is illegal in all States in Australia. Cops will check your call logs, if they have to, to prove the point you were driving and using the phone at the same time.

Believe it or not, a few bus drivers each year lose their job for trying to do just that, under the gaze of 5 cameras!  We've lost 3 or 4 drivers at my depot over the past 3 or so years for technically doing that (one was answering a bus radio but the same principle. Which was rather dumb, as  everytime you get on the radio, there's a recording, road noise, engine noise, changing gears etc if you are driving!  :tard:). No sympathy, instant dismissal no matter how long you've been employed (two people had been employed for over 10 years at our Depot).

When the matter of degree is causes disproportionate harm.

but the point i was making is that a single person alone on their hands-free set could be less likely to cause an accident than a mother with 3 young children in the car.

Wow, I honestly didn't expect this much of a response.
Given the way I've been acting lately...Well, thanks for reading and for the kind words.

Let me take a selfish chance to say I'm sorry for being a bit...spikey...This year so far has really sucked...in a LOT of ways...but that's not y'all's fault.
Especially to Gregg. He lets me in to his house and I track mud all over it.  :sad1: Sorry, man. I'll be cool from now on.

I am glad, however that we've gotten a good conversation going here! For sure won't be texting while driving!

Let me just say that my wife was in the passenger seat, which was the side of the vehicle that was struck. I made sure she was ok, about 4 or five times, ha. I got out of my car and approached the other driver...which probably wasn't the best idea, considering what I was about to do to this guy. It was a good thing for him that the cops came when they did. I'm not gonna get too detailed, cause I'm not a show off, and I dont' want to get myself in trouble, HAHA

Bottom line, It's up to each of us to try and keep eachother safe. What am i? some tough guy hippie? hahaha
Thanks for looking.

Stay safe out there, Lads and Lasses!

i totally appreciate what you're saying. And if you had laid the guy out right there, i wouldn't blame you. i'd resist the urge to applaud you, but i can definitely say i'd understand. if my fiance was threatened I'd have flipped out.

I have to be tougher on myself. I try to avoid using the phone in the car but i just don't think about it sometimes and i end up doing it a lot. i'm an overconfident driver. partly because i just drive to and from work, which is like a 5 minute drive on backroads with little or no traffic. but that's no excuse. and i'm grateful for this discussion because it reminds me the importance of being more responsible

dNA, You bring up a good point. It's about 'over confidence'
We make so many assumptions about our lives that we don't bother to verify. Those assumptions become "rights" to many of us. I'm guilty of it in the past, texting while driving, etc.

In the last couple of days, I remember my dad teaching me to drive. He NEVER went went the light turned green!
When the light turned green, he would then look over at the cross traffic to make sure nobody was running the light, THEN he would go. As a teenager, it was the most infuriating two seconds of my life! hahahaha.

Now that I'm an old salt (HA) I know why he did that. God bless Dad!

yeah. part of the reason I'm an overconfident driver is that almost everyone in my family is a terrible driver, and i get told that i'm very calm and in control when i drive - which just goes to my head.
it's good to be humbled now and again.

I didn't get my driver's license until I was 23, partly because I had a bad experience as a teenager and I was terrified of it.  Now that I've been driving for a few years though, I'm still terrified enough to keep me safe most of the time.  I speed sometimes though, but on certain freeways you'll just get flattened if you don't at least a little bit.

Take a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course even if you don't intend to ride.  I guarantee once you realize that you have to be aware of all things going on around you (i.e. paying attention) to help ensure that you are not run over by vehicle with more than 2 wheels, you will be a better driver when in the car.

do DMV's offer that?

Reading, Pennsylvania. I suppose i could look it up. The idea of riding a motorcycle terrifies me.

There are a couple of motorcycle dealership in Leesport that sponsor some courses.  Check out: http://www.pamsp.com/courselookup.aspx
