Well, I finally did it. I took my own advice, (which I freely gave to any coworker dumb enough to ask): "25 and out!" So, after 25 years in uniform, I retired.

Dealing with the piles of stupidity that are required to run the daily operations of a correctional facility, just didn't seem to make sense anymore. So I ran around for the last couple of months, dealing with the stupidity that's required to sort out the details of retirement, and left State service last week.

Apart from the many, many good Officers and Supervisors that I have worked for, and that have worked for me, the thing I'll miss the most is my time spent on the range. As an MPTC certified weapons and Use-of-Force instructor, I spent a good amount of my Officer time as a Range Officer at various facilities. But NYS doesn't pay Sergeants and Lieutenants to hang out at the range, so taking promotions put me further and further away from what I truly wanted to do.

Now, in celebration of my retirement, I've decided to go back to doing the things I love, and one of those things is going to the range. And, to facilitate my return to the range, I bought myself a little present...

My Department transitioned to Glock 17's and 19's a few years ago. Leaving State service means I no longer have access to State weapons, so now seemed like the perfect time to buy my own! It's a G19 Gen3 with Truglo TFO sights. (That's a Tritium/Fiber Optic combo sight, gives you the best visibility in any light. Rear sight also has a "Novak" style profile to keep it from snagging.) An extend mag release and slide stop, as well as a stainless steel recoil spring assembly, are already on order.

Yesterday, I spent some quality time at the local range with my new G19, (instead of fixing my amp!). Shoots very well, in fact I think I shoot better with the G19 than the G17, despite it's shorter sight radius. Maybe it's the sights, maybe it's because it just feels more comfortable in my hand. Either way, I'm happy with it. This retirement thing just might work out!  :glasses9:

Congratulations!  I'm really happy for you.  May your shooting be plentiful and enjoyable! (and everything else about your retirement.

Enjoy your retirement.  :icon_thumright:

I just heard one of the most stupid things of my career today so I can relate to that.

Congratulations on the retirement, Steve. Congratulations on the new purchase, too. The 19 is the best frame size. I always found the 17 to be a bit clumsy feeling by comparison. Now, go out there and have some fun. Build a few more guitars, too.  :icon_thumright:

Congrats on retirement and the new gun! Maybe you are shooting well because you are so relaxed in your retirement  :toothy10:

Oh yes. Nice piece!

I really liked the Smith and Wesson that I shot recently with the TFO sights; they call theirs Hi-Viz I think. Adjusting to them was a breeze and I found my accuracy was up in just one session with them. I'm having a think on swapping the Baretta 9mm I have for one of those or a Glock. Tough call though because I like the balance of the Baretta so much.

The Finance Department, back in the day, was in Burbank PD so a trip to the range is always good for a date night. :glasses10:

Double congratulations! My dad and I occasionally indulge in Ted Nugent days: a trip to the range followed by a jam session. Happy retirement, enjoy your guns and guitars!

When my son was 4, he asked me what retirement was. (I told him someone was retired). So I said, if you save up enough money to live on, you don't have to go to work anymore. His response: "Dad, I want you to save up your money and retire!" He of course meant like maybe next month, so we could spend his childhood playing in the creek/ woods all day. Sigh... wish I could.

Many thanks to all!
Funny, but since I "retired", I'm busier than ever! I'm also much less stressed. Didn't mean to take so long to answer, but here goes...

Thanks stratmania, if you wanna here stupid, consider this: Staff is absolutely forbidden to have any kind of personal communication device inside a facility. Theory is that the inmates could use those devices for nefarious purposes, if the were to fall into their hands. But, the State now intends to issue tablets to the inmates, which of course have had their communication capabilities "disabled". Except that they need blue tooth to communicate with the kiosks they are installing. Inmates in another state have already hacked the system, and in fact, were able to steal in excess of $300K, while still in jail! But don't worry, that can't happen in NY.....

Thanks Rob! As for the Glock, that's my feelings exactly, G19 is by far the most comfy auto-loader I've used so far. May someday pick up a G43, which was designed from the start as a single stack, 10rnd, pistol.

Thank you sir! Relaxation should be taught as the 6th fundamental of handgun shooting. Right after Grip, Stance, Sight Alignment, Trigger Control, and Breathing!

Yes indeed Mike, a Baretta is definitely a fine weapon. So, why not just get the Glock too? And I like your Finance Dept, gotta love a lady who enjoys a day at the range!

Thanks Vern!  In fact I was just watching a couple of Ted's videos from Fox news and a few others. Man don't mince words, does he......

We all wish we could have done that, but working just always seemed to get in the way. We just have to spend the time we can with them. Funny thing is, now that I'm retired, both of my sons are too busy working! (Ghee, somebody ought to write a song 'bout that, maybe Felix Hoenikker? Nah......)  :icon_scratch:

I see what you did there...  :laughing7:

I'll tell you aother oddity about retirement - you never have time because you're just too busy, but you don't seem to get anything done  ???

I haven't tried a G43. Like you, I may have to do that one of these days.

Congrats on your retirement from the force.

As the brother of a fellow officer I salute you for your service... :eek:ccasion14:

Nice shooter, my brothers unit switched from Glocks to Sigs, this is his service weapon.

I get it. I'm still a 1911 fan. Nothing fits my hand better but new technology has some definite advantages.

Bless you for serving!

Love the Glock, can't afford one, but I am digging my Taurus G2 PT111 Millennium.  I downsized about 3 years ago to it from my old Taurus PT100 in .40 S&W after 22 years, and found that even here in the Pacific Northwest where we tend to wear more layers, it was just to heavy & bulky.

The G2 is perfectly sized for CCW, while still carrying 13 in the magazine + 1 in the pipe.

Someday, a G17, someday...

Doug, is that laser engraving on your brother's slide? I see a possible business opportunity....

Tony, I just checked out that Taurus G2 on line. That's a nice little gun, especially for the price. I have some experience with Taurus 92's. Also a lot of firearm for the price. And just remember, the best pistol for self defense, is the one you have with you! Stay safe Brother...

Yes Steve, that's his shield laser engraved on the slide. But I couldn't get that level of detail on a curved surface that small...

But I have toyed with the idea of slide engraving... :toothy10:
