When I was in college, I worked at Chic-fil-a before landing a coop job in my major. Its good stuff for fast food, but after a wile... I figured out not only can you MAKE a BLT, you can ORDER it off the menu if you know how. (Bun Deluxe add bacon)

In that spirit of contrarian resourcefulness - I discovered that Warmoth ALREADY offers a seven string baritone with a chunkier neck profile!

G5, no routes but the neck pocket. Takes the Deluxe 5 neck, which if you get fretless, undrilled, will let you mount a seven string flatmount where I have it placed here for 28.625" scale length.  Fretting is the only piece of this thats beyond the average guy with a router's skills.

Depends. I don't have anything against it, but I also see no reason to keep it. Straight string pull probably dictates something else. Right now though...I'm thinking about that last statement in the first post. If I could buy it already fretted for 28.625, it'd be more realistic. If I'm going to have to do my own fretting and slotting, I might as well do the whole thing. You're still paying a lot of money for the non precision basic woodworking.

Basswood is  $4.60/bf for 8/4 locally
Hard Maple is $4.60/bf for 4/4 (and $6.60/bf for flame. Might as well)
Padauk/Purpleheart/Bubbinga are $8-10 in 4/4
Walnut is $7.25/bf for 4/4

And since its local, its ALL unique choice.  Man, I wish the previous owner of the house had left his jazz bass router templates in the workshop when they moved. He did leave me a nice 7 guitar rack stand in the attic. Which of course I didn't find until I had already bought the exact same model.

And just for the record - Deluxe 5 neck:

Deluxe 5 - String Series
d5contour.jpg

The Deluxe 5 Series bass necks feature an asymmetric contour where the bass side is thicker and the treble side is thinner. The end result is a strong, stable neck that is also fast and easy to play. Built with our Super Bass Construction for strength and stability.
Average Thickness:

    Thickness at 1st fret = .865" (22mm)
    Thickness at 12th fret = .975" (25mm)

No falling off the edge of this fingerboard. You could easily fit 8 on there. (In addition to the 'I want to step on the bass player' crowd, some folks who play in Major 3rds tuning use 8 strings to get 2 1/3 octaves open, since it takes seven strings just to get back to 2 octaves.)
