Hi,

I have been looking on this forum for about a year now and have finally taken the plunge and ordered a guitar.

Its going to be wenge and unfinished.  What I want to know is if you think I need to oil it.  I'm sure there are post on here saying what to do but I cant find them.  If someone could point me in the correct direction that would be great.  I dont want to change the look of the wood, just look after it

Also is there any way of knowing what stage of the build they are at?  I want to know when I should start taking days off to sit by the front door waiting for the postman!

Welcome to the forum, Kris!

You don't have to do anything to Wenge. It's fine the way it is and will stay that way. Besides, it's so dense it wouldn't absorb oil if you boiled it in the stuff. All it requires is that you enjoy it.

I will love him, and pet him, and call him "George"!

Any idea what a wenge body would weigh?  I thought it might be a bit much so I'm having it chambered

Good move. It's heavy stuff. Roughly double the weight of Alder (see here for a list of many wood densities, and here to compare to Wenge), so I'd expect a solid Strat body to weigh 7 or 8 pounds. Add another 3 for the neck and whatnot, you may be looking at a 10 pound guitar. I don't know what the savings are with a chambered part, but I think it's around 30% so you may still be looking at an 8 pounder. That's no heavier than a Les Paul, and people have been living with those for 50+ years.

It may be myth, but I've heard Wenge doesn't float.  :dontknow:

You don't need to oil it, but I have a Wenge neck I've lemon oiled before.  I forget which variety, and if considering, do a good search.  You don't want to use Pledge or any of the cleanser plus conditioner crap.  There is a certain no-no chemical you want to avoid.  it escapes me, but whatever you get will say "contains" or "does not contain" the said no-no chemical on the label.

Here's some pics of the after.  Don't have any from before, but it looked drier.

wenge is really nice. If you're worried about protecting it, no need. It took a chunk out of a forumers ceiling fan with barely a dent.

Thanks for the welcome and the advice!

Also thanks for another picture of wenge to wet my appetite some more!  That neck looks really nice

Will post pics when I get her, its an ALL wenge VIP, cream binding, silver hardware
