Hey forum,

I'm new to this process, and have recently received a Stratocaster body and neck from Warmoth (you can see this in the new arrivals section).  It is a 3lb 10oz swamp ash body and a flamed maple neck.  Body are unfinished.  I thought that this would be the right place to ask all of my questions, so here they are... For the body, what kind of grain filler would you recommend?  I have been looking around reranch, and they seem to have some good stuff.  I will probably use them for the paint as well (I am thinking Dakota Red).  After I use filler, do I sand the body down again and then add paint, followed by clear coat nitrocellulose?  For the neck, I was going to add fender neck amber, and apply a thin-skin nitro finish.  Is it as easy as just adding the two, or do I need to sand and follow additional steps? Should I tape over the frets and nut?  Also, should I drill the holes for the tuners (I'm thinking vintage locking staggered Gotoh's) before I apply the finish?  How about for the string tree (If I think I will need one)? Thanks for getting through this post, any help would be greatly appreciated.  I will put up pictures along the way!!!

You might want to put on some sanding sealer before you start grain filling. Also, the grain fill is going to take several passes. If it's very thin, such as the Colortone stuff StewMac sells, it may take numerous passes. Either way, you'll be sanding between each pass. Then you can paint, and clear coat after that.
