new neck - any install tips?

ordered a new neck from Warmoth for my Strat mim, tuners will be Sperzel's.

it should arrive in  a few weeks, any tips on installing it?

is it just a matter of unbolting the old one and bolting the new one on and restringing?

if you're looking at the guitar whilst it's laying on a table, the neck will go on by pushing down, not by sliding it in. don't be alarmed if it's a snug fit.

My MIM body is wearing a Warmoth neck. With the original neck I could fit a pick on either side at the joint, now I couldn't fit a baby's hair.

thanks for the tips.

i don't have plans to put a tree on it. the sperzel's will be the staggered locking type.

its mahogany. the stock mim is maple so i wanted to try something else.

cheers!

Yep, that's about it - with the exception of the tuner installation and setup.

For Sperzel tuners, a jig is very nice to have.  Here's one:

If you are putting screws in maple (i.e. string trees), drill pilot holes and wax the screw threads.

I strongly suggest a set of nut files for the setup.

That's about it.

this jig is a bit expensive for probably a one-two time usage. sperzel has no template or such?

if that is the only thing that will enable a correct alignment, then what the hey, i'll order it. thx

the nut files, is that to trim the nut up a bit for the desired string size?

what if i start with 11's, file a bit for those, then go back to 10's or 9's will the nut sill support those sizes?

If I remember right, the sperzels come with a template on the box lid that should be good enough for one install.
If you think you will be doing several necks then the SM jig is great, but pretty expensive for a once.
But then it's always nice to have tools in the box.

Actually it's for lowering the action at the nut to improve playability.  The warmoth nuts come cut pretty high - this is one thing that i always need to do to them to make the necks work for me.

took awhile to save up for this, so a one time deal for now. thanks for letting me know

though looks like i'd need 6 files @13.00 a piece over at stewmac. or just one file to lower the slots a bit and not so much to widen?

sorry for so many questions, wanting to have everything on hand i need when the neck arrives versus waiting for some tool to be shipped to me that i need.

Unless you're planning on using the same string gauge for each string, you'll need 6 different files - each matched to the gauge of the string in that position.

If you're getting your neck from Warmoth and they install the nut, it will be slotted and all you should have to do is adjust for string size & height. You can do this with sand paper, welder tip files, even guitar strings. Just go slow & be careful.
Read about doing setups. You will need to be able to do a good setup if you change the neck. Probably a couple of times.
That in itself will require certain tools.
So if you can do all of the basic stuff required to change a neck it is
"Yup. Just like that."  :guitarplayer2:

When installing the tuners, be careful of the tuner screws. They ahve caused a headache for plenty of people.

Drill a pilot hole, slightly enlarge the entrance of the hole, measure your depth of the hole carefully (you won't want to break through!), use a lubricant when screwing in the screw.

Also be careful not to burr the screwhead. My solution for this is to use electronics magnifying visors so you clearly see the screw head and apply a good fitting screw driver to it. And watch it screw in with the visor on, so you can see it turning very clearly. You do not want the screwdriver to slip at all. A damaged screw head will mean that it will be harder to remove in the future. Use jewellers' screw drivers for this (available at most electronics stores, quite cheap).
