Guys... help me out here. please. I want a new project. I need something on my hands. What I want is a les-paulverized version of this:

I'm not supposed to like Ed Roman('s guitars) but I like this one anyway. sorry.

its a spruce top on korina, with a macassar ebony neck and board.

I want it!!!!! badly. No color, no bindings, just woods. Maybe I'll go for zebra pickups! no gold, for a change, perhaps?! but ofcourse a floyd.

the second guitar I want to make in the project is something like this

walnut on korina. I want it with a cocobolo neck and either a cocobolo board of ebony.

gold floyd and zebra pickups.

help!

If you're looking to have a similar body, the closest from W you could get would be a six string version of the W7 string. PT has one in zebrawood if I recall, I was thinking of doing one myself, I started a thread about it somewhere around here.

As for the second one, I can't tell what the full body shape is, half the pic is cut off on my phone browser.. :dontknow:

I think what you're looking at there is a PRS Custom 24, which from Warmoth the closest would be a VIP. They used to make one that was dead-on, but word around the campfire is that PRS bitched, so they had to modify it slightly or risk litigation. Still a fine piece of work, though. I have two of them here, on of the old PRS style, and if I had it all to do over again I might consider making that my mainstay body style rather than the Strat.

I Don't want something similar in shape to what I've posted, but those rods in a Les Paul shape...I posted them to illustrate the inspiration and what might look like in the end.

Uhhhhhm, they'll look like Les Pauls....

Just click and hold on the image and a menu will pop up. It's like a right click. Then you can select view and it will resize it.

Most likely I'll be using wenge for the sprucetop and padouk or canary or goncalo or imbuia for the other (or maybe even goncalo for one and imbuia for the other). that depends on availability and pricing, ofcourse. cocobolo is just a PITA to find, and ebony is even worse, because it's just not stable enough. oh well. it saves me over 200$ PER NECK!

Stability has nothing to do with it. In fact, those are highly stable woods. The problem with them is they're both uncommon, somewhat regulated, and the dust they produce while machining is toxic even to people who aren't normally sensitive to such things. That's why it's tough to find people who'll work it and why the stuff so expensive.

cocobolo is stable, agreed, but ebony is highly unstable. I've seen a block of ebony which was cut 50 years ago and has been airdried for 30 years (at least!) twist and turn and crack like crazy in a 3 year span. it really, really is unstable, just like snakewood and lignum vitae (very very very hard wood, if I recall corrctly, harder than ebony).

I think if it was that bad, nobody would use it. I've certainly never had any trouble with it, nor known anyone who has until you just now mentioned it. Although, I have seen a couple cracked 'boards. I wouldn't attribute that to instability, though. That was more likely due to poor seasoning or wild fluctuations in environment. It's a very dense wood, so it's not going to want to move too much without something giving.
