Doug, that is excellent!  I think mamma wouldn't be too happy with that stuck to him, but I do have something that she might just go for:

And thank you everyone for the kind words. This is not my first kid, but he is my first son.  It is amazing each time and this time is no different.

We are in the hospital for a few more days yet (blood sugar issues in both mom and baby), but it looks like we'll be home by Monday.  And not a moment too soon.  That is the day that the meat of the Jazzmaster arrives.  With any luck, I should have pics of both builds up by Monday.  :headbang1:

Guitars come and guitars go, even amazing ones.  Nothing approximates the love you'll feel for your wee ones, even when they grow into the same insufferable beast you were as a teenager - and then into the presumably decent adult you've become.  It's awesome.  Congratulations.

One of the reasons I have never reproduced.

BTW .... probably a good thing you have the guitar to work on, as the wife just might be saying ...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzuRw0ZqQdU

Nicely done Updown.  Even Mrs. Combover got a kick out of that one.

For those of you who have had the misfortune of having a newborn in the NICU, you understand well when I say that I do not wish that on anyone.  That being said, we are all home now and all is well.  We are just exhausted.

As for the Warmoth, the body, neck, and pickguard arrived today.  Since my first build was riddled with flame and quilt and matching peg faces and a very traditional Tele electronic set up, I wanted to go the opposite direction on this one.  I wanted simple and elegant looks with varied and complicated (for me anyway) electronics.  A Jazzmaster has been on my "truly cool" guitar list for a while now, so when I saw this one in the screaming deals section (chambered in alpine white and without the dreaded JM bridge), I knew it was true love.  Plus it truly was a screaming deal.  I am putting p-rails in here along with the Ghost Piezo system, or at least that is what I am going to try to do.

Parts + the dry fit:

And of course, the little champ who had a rough first few days and is now home with mom and dad:

The happiness continues and endures.  :rock-on:

Thanks Bagman.

Here is the conversation that happened when we were first admitted to the NICU:

Nurse: "Wow, you have a really cute baby. They're not all cute you know."

Me: "Well, you would know."

Nurse: "When they're not, we say they're precious."

:laughing3:

My first-born spent her first two days in the NICU.  She was 8 lbs. 14 oz.  She looked like a linebacker amid all those tiny, tiny preemies.  But the stomach-clenching anxiety of having your new human being re-routed into a plastic box while they figure out if her lungs are gonna work right.  Which they did, and extremely well.  15 years later I have a guitar dedicated to her.

It took some diligence and a bit of patience, but the tuners that I really wanted finally arrived.  Time to start the build.  It will be here:

And the Schallers...

Hey PC,
Great lookin' build you have going on there.  Have you used those Schaller M6 tuners before?  I really like the looks of them and would like to try them on a future build, but I will let you give me your opinion of them first.
Did you have to order those from Schaller?  Just curious because I see you have Black knurled knobs with chrome tuners.  The out of the box sets I have seen are all one color.
Keep the pics a rollin'

Oh yea, congratulations on that other special build you have there. :icon_thumright:  Greet looking future guitar hero...

So far, so good.  They are identical in almost everyway to the ones that lock in back, but something about the top lockers I think just makes them cool.  :cool01:

I have never seen a guitar in person that has them, so for customization sake I naturally gravitated toward them.  Nevertheless, they are just tuners.  Functionally, however, it is nice to have the locks on top so that you don't have to reach around to lock them in place. They came standard with the black tops.  All of the offerings from gold to ruthenium all had the black tops standard, but I am told you can order them with matching tops.  The black and chrome just really works for this build.

As for the ordering odyssey...

I first tried to find them on Amazon and Ebay, but no luck.  I found them on a UK Ebay site, but they refused to ship to the states.  Next I turned to Schaller directly, but they told me to contact one of their wholesalers (mentioning Allparts by name).  So I contacted Allparts and they told me that they would charge $125 to special order them and it could take up to 3 months to arrive.    :o

So I next began looking at some questionable looking international websites, but never built up the courage to do it.  Then I stumbled upon these guys:  http://www.touchstonetonewoods.co.uk/products/electric-114/  I emailed their manager (Neil, who took very good care of me) and the rest is history.  Turned out to be about $90 and they arrived in about ten days. On my next build, I want to use vintage copper Schallers, so I will definitely go with them again.

And thank you for the baby props.  He is a great blessing in our lives and a swell kid.

Hey PC,
I have to thank you greatly for the tip about Touchstone Tonewoods for the Schaller top locking tuners.
I went to their website and tried to order them.  Messed around on their site for 30 or 40 minutes and could not get it to work related to it not accepting my USA phone number.  I finally said to heck with this, I will just call them.
Called them early last Friday morning and the guy that answered was nice as could be.  Really apologized for the challenges with the website and was happy to take my order over the phone.
He threw in a free Schaller screwdriver thingy for my aggravation on the website.  Total price for tuners, 3 extra locking knobs, and air mail postage to the U.S. was 82.63.  Much less than what Allparts quoted you!
Plus, I ordered them last Friday morning; they were in my mail box today (Friday), one week later.
There are many times I have wanted to order Schaller parts, but finding all of their line for purchase in the U.S. is often a challenge.  Plus, I really hate dealing with Allparts...
I will definatly be going back to these fine U.K. friends for Schaller parts.
Thanks again for the tip and  :rock-on:

I'm glad to hear of this source for Schaller parts, too. It is, as you say, a real challenge to get many of their offerings here in the States.

Allparts is a funny place. I suspect they don't really want to deal with retail sales, so they set their prices at a point where if they have to do it, they're at least going to make some serious money at it. I know if you go into a music store where they sell parts, they're often packaged by Allparts, and they're usually less expensive than you can buy them from Allparts online. And you know the store's making money on the stuff, so that means Allparts is shifting the stuff out for a helluva lot less than what they mark on their website.

So, I tend to stay away from them. They don't want to do business with me, that's fine. I'll try not to cry myself to sleep over it. It's not like they don't have competition for my dollars.

I'm still wondering why Schaller just doesn't offer some of their parts over here.  They are a well known, well respected company and their parts are used in some fashion by nearly every major guitar company, so why not make their entire catalog available?  :dontknow:

I can imagine it being one or more of three reasons.

One, they have some sort of ridiculous dealer discount requirement that nobody's willing to buy into. Could be they want you to buy $50K worth of product and guarantee some level of quarterly or annual sales or they won't talk to you. A lot of manufacturers do that, for reasons I won't bore you with here. But, examples in the music industry would be Gibson and Fender. Just being a musical instrument dealer isn't enough - you've got to commit to a major business relationship or forget about it.

Two, there could be intellectual property issues. The way patents/copyrights/trademarks/trade agreements/etc. work these days, it's tough to get out of bed in the morning without exposing yourself to some major litigation even if you're a beach bum, let alone some manufacturer who's actually succeeding at making a profit. They may be saying "to hell with the US market, it's not worth the risk".

Three, and least likely, they're stupid.
