Polly,
You say you've been playing for 6 years, so you should be able to tell people what neck sizings, fret sizes and woods you'd prefer.
Check out the Warmoth site, read all about the various woods. Look at your favourite instrument, or one you want to emulate. What types of wood does it have? Pickups?
There are a lot of variables in making up a guitar. Your own knowledge as a player will tell you what you feel comfortable playing, and like to hear from a guitar.
Most of us have reached the stage where we can say what type of neck we want to play, the types of woods we prefer in which style of instruments and the pickups used.
If you can sit down, write out what you want to achieve, have a look at the Warmoth website, get some info off this forum and have a look around at other forums too, then you should soon get a better idea about what you want.
Spending good money on a body, neck, and hardware and then finding out it's not what you wanted in the first place would be a major disappointment, I'd guess. Do your research and limit the chances of that happening.
We can offer you several ideas if you give us some clue about what you want, but at the end of the day you have to play the instrument and be happy with the end result, not us.
If you want a Les Paul style of instrument, go for mahogany body, maple laminated top, maple neck and rosewood fingerboard. Use humbuckers and a Tune O Matic bridge and tailpiece. 2 volume controls and 2 tone controls with a 3 way toggle switch. Alll pretty standard fare, and well covered on the Warmoth site.
