Almost five weeks since ordering and it's here.

My first reaction is WOW. Warmoth did an excellent job. Neck (LP, for an SG build) wood is wenge, fretboard is macassar ebony. Standard thin, the wenge feels really fast and smooth. According to Warmoth it doesn't need a finish, so I think I'll just leave it. Fretboard feels awesome, can't wait to see what it will play like, but I'll have to.

The only head scratcher here is the neck joint (last picture). I didn't order a 720 mod, so I wasn't expecting the extension (only 22 frets). This is a conversion angled though, maybe that is why. No matter, the body is still just a piece of walnut without a neck pocket. The concern is that it's for an SG build - meaning tune-o-matic bridge etc, and if I recall correctly that requires a 3 degree angle on the neck pocket. Can I still do that with fretboard overhang? The neck pocket will be CNC routed in a few weeks.

I'll post more pics on the build thread when work continues mid January.

Yes, you can still have the correct angle in the neck pocket.

BTW... That is a stellar looking neck...

Very nice neck.

Bit of advice if you've never screwed anything into Wenge before, get extra screws as you will inevitably strip at least one of them, especially small screws..  The wood is rock hard to screw in to, even with pilot holes.

Wow! Once you put strings on it, that fretboard will cause epilepsy from all the crazy lines... awesome!!!

This is one of the only things that bugs me about Warmoth necks.  Any neck with 22 frets has the extension.  It's a very minor quabble, and everything else about their necks is brilliant, but because of the extension thing i generally prefer 21-fret necks from them.

Also, that neck is beautiful!  those are some wonderfully figured woods, and i think tonally they'll complement each other nicely.

Thanks - I'll continue with the plan for an angled neck pocket.

Thanks - I'll get two sets of screws when I order. I don't know if I've ever even seen Wenge before!

I'm thinking this will cause confusion and possibly seizures will all of those lines. They look so much cooler than inlays, at least in my opinion.

Thanks. Yeah it's a minor thing I suppose. I guess next build (because after getting this there will probably HAVE to be another build down the line) I'll go with 21 frets.

I'm really interested in what the wood combination will sound like with the walnut body.

i don't know what you mean about the fretboard extension... all 22 fret fender necks that i've ever seen have that extension. the 720 mod is to deepen the neck pocket so that a fretboard extension isn't as high, it doesn't have anything to do with canceling out a fretboard extension. warmoth would have to make a completely new neck pocket and neck style to get rid of the extension.

anyway that is one amazing looking neck! can't wait to see this project finished!

I realize this now. Was confusing the 720 mod with a fretboard extension. Also missed this part: A fingerboard with 22 frets is considered the industry "standard" for the last few decades and sports the typical 1/4" overhang off the end of the heel.

Thanks for the clarification.

I have a wenge neck and if you're using tuners that require small screws make sure you WAX THE SCREWS! haven't stripped a screw yet

Aha thanks for the tip, I'll do that for sure as I tend to get impatient and strip screws.

That is a great project you have going on.
I love that neck; the fingerboard is just crazy.
Can't wait to see her finished pics...

Thanks. Ordered the rest of the parts for the build last night so hopefully we'll have it done mid Feb or so. Can't wait to PLAY on that fingerboard.
