My latest thing

Excellent work!  I have yet to get the nerve to get into the mic building side, it's only a matter of time, but successful builds foster group confidence.  I found my short in my latest build, sort of...  I'm going to say it's a good day.  Pretty mic you got there.

Well done, Mayfly. I'm glad the project has turned out so well for you. It seems that you got your hands on some great components, but more than that, this is a testament to your assembly and troubleshooting skills, and perseverance. I chuckled a bit to see your temporary component testing boards - because my benchtop has seen the same sort of items. And nice work on the populating of those boards. I could swear that resistors and caps get smaller every year. No, it can't be my eyes getting worse - it's just a coincidence that I keep stepping up the power of my magnifying equipment.

Too bad that cap crapped out on you. Those box types have failed on me before too. And that sort of thing is a real pain to track down, and de-soldering sux, so cudos to you. These days I try, whenever possible, for most caps to stick to high-quality film chicklets. I never use tants or oils (bah, humbug). But I do use polystyrenes for very small signal-chain caps, although you're right that they're really easy to burn. And they're getting miserably hard to source. You wouldn't happen to have the name of a good supplier, would you?

Yeah desoldering sucks, but if you start to build the higher end DIY stuff, it is worth it to get a Hakko 808 desoldering gun.  Expensive, yes.  But when you need it, whoa nellie, it is an incredibly well designed tool.

Thank you gentlemen.  :eek:ccasion14:

Now I just have to build the second one!  :headbang:

Gentlemen,

I've finished the second mic!  Much easier the second time, with much neater wiring as well.  Pics in a bit, but I have a tale to tell.

As I put in the boards and other parts I thought "maybe I should change that one cap now".  But then I thought "Nah!  what's the chances that BOTH are bad?".  Well, it turns out that the chances that both were bad were pretty high!  Same issues with the second mic, and the same solution.  Box type out, Mallory in.

I set up a Blumlein pair last night with both mics on figure 8.  I did some recoding with just me and a guitar.  I'll post that in a bit.

Must've been a bad batch of caps. Actually, I'm surprised at their being the problem. For the symptoms you described, I'd have blamed an op amp or transistor far ahead of a cap, and when replacing one of those didn't solve it, I'd start getting pissed.

Here's a little thing I whipped up fast:

http://www.cornflowerbluemusic.com/BandDownloads/files/YSMANL_U87Mastered.mp3

I set up the mics in the room, played through the guitar 'amp' (AxeFX into Bose L1) and sang at the mics.  Everything went through the mics as a stereo pair.

Some notes:
1 - too much reverb!
2 - voice distortion at end was because I was clipping my DAW.  Might benefit from compression in the front end...

But the mics sound good

Excellent!

I guess we can give the mics some credit, but I gotta say you've got a great singing voice.

Also loving the treatment. Bet your throat feels better the next day than Brian Johnson's did  :icon_biggrin:

Now we should hear a comparison to MaryJoseph to see if the effort was worth it.

Thanks man!  You know, whenever I play guitar I try to be either Don Rich, Clarence White, or Billy Zoom.  But whenever I sing I try to be just one man:  George Jones.  Don't know how well I succeed at any of those, but I try.

LOL. Was totally not expecting that after the intro.

Whenever we do this in a bar, the crowd really loves it.  I can get the whole place singing along  :headbang:

Sources? I found a place just selling the capsules, and place selling kits with bodies, but they only had a handful that didn't really interest me. (Either tube or cardiod only).

I just realized that I never replied to this.  Sorry about that.

The Bodies and transformers came from here: http://store.studio939.com/

The PCBs came from Dany bouchard here:http://groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=49675.0

Capsules came from a guy named Eric available here: http://groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=49859.0

parts from digikey.  Parts list and build thread are here: http://groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=48030.0

Got to listen here at home, I like it.  Trevor, it sounds like you'd be a fan of the Old 97's.  The mics sound very good.  Just beware of building yourself a 51X rack so that you can try other mic pre flavors...

Thanks man!  Naw, the Neve clones sound fine.  I may build some compressors, but that's it.  I can't be messing around too much with gear, I've got an album to record!

I got the boards and case to build the PYE comp, and that one is intriguing to me.  However, I understand the DIY quicksand problem.  Oh well, the nice part about the recording equipment is, at least you can get your money back if you sell it.  But with those pre's and those mics, you have some pretty nice tools for the next record.
