My first Warmoth build.

Hi there,

I have just joined this as I am planning to do my first Warmoth build.

At present I am thinking of taking a V-K body made of Black Korina with Satin finish, routed for three humbuckers and a recessed Wilkinson tremolo. I want to make the neck a CBS Strat Warmoth Pro construction 1 piece Rosewood neck. Can anyone give me any advice regarding this combination? I am very new to all this. I've also noticed that Warmoth doesn't appear to stock the toggle switch parts for an LP style toggle and I figure that I may need to get some parts off Stewmac.

Any advice for me? I am very new to all this and would appreciate it.

Regards,
William.

Hi ...  :icon_biggrin:

This Toggle switch .... http://www.warmoth.com/Switches-C80.aspx

VK body with a CBS headstock ......  :icon_scratch:  Ummmmmm ..... really !!
Think a Warmoth or Warhead or Jack-1 or Arrow or even a Paddle headstock would look better than a CBS.

But it is your build remember.

I have a Rosewood neck on a Swamp Ash Strat body SSS with Dimarzio Area's, it is one of my fav's.
The sound of that is just perfect as is.

Both Black Korina and Rosewood is similar to Mahogany, if that's what ya after.
Goncalo Alves is another RAW neck wood, just up the scale slightly from Rosewood.
That could match the Satin finish on the Black Korina Body too.

What Humbuckers are you using ?

Others will toss there 2c in  :icon_thumright:

Thanks for all that.

In regards to the humbuckers, I'm not really sure yet. Maybe put a Dimarzio 36th anniversary in the bridge. Would like something quite Jazzy in the neck and middle. Have to do some more research.

Also wondering if I Should just have two pickups. Maybe put a Lollar Low Wind Imperial in the neck.

Arh yes  ..... the old problem of having to many options, just means you need to build a few guitars  :icon_biggrin:

I don't own any HHH guitars, so can't comment on that. Or Lollar puppies either.
(seen plenty of other owners have thou)

I got big hands and fingers and just find it a bit confined for me with any HHH I have played.
Have got plenty of HXH and a few others of SSH, SSS, SST, TXP-Rail, P-Rail X P-Rail
(that's from neck to bridge) as I know others say it the other way around.  :toothy11:

If ya know what your after, sound wise.
Can get pups made to what you want via ... Bare Knuckles & others, someone here does pickups too, But stupid me can't think who it is
:icon_scratch:  Ummmm .... might be TroubledTreble.

Someone will correctly name whom it is, if I am wrong.

I have got 2 Black Korina bodies but they don't have Rosewood necks on them.
One Strat has Pau-Ferro / Macassar Ebony, the other Tele has Bocote / Ziricote.

Research is good  :icon_thumright:
Don't be afraid to ask any Q's either, thats how we ALL learn things.
But remember too, that we ALL have our own preferences too. As would yourself.
You will find some very very good knowledge / help around here. In all things !!

Did I mention get SS Frets for the neck  :icon_biggrin:

Thinking I might just put 36th Anniversary's in the neck and bridge.

And thanks, will get the stainless steel ones, cheers.

I'm guessing this would be the right wiring for this guitar? Although I wouldn't be able to use the second tone knob.

Those wiring kits are grossly overpriced. You can get the individual parts for less than the kit. They're not right for what you're planning anyway, if you're going to have three pickups. You need a different switch, and probably a different number of pots.

Also, putting a CBS Strat head on a V body will cause pecker cancer. Just sayin'.

Think I'll just have two pickups now but yeah they still aren't really right. I live in NZ which cuts down my options for parts a little bit but I'll do more looking around online.

I used this one on a V and SG and Strats ... http://www.warmoth.com/LP-Toggle-Switch-Straight-Black-P738C80.aspx
Think the long ones are for LP or carved top guitars.
That other one (you linked to) I have used on a pickguard on a Tele Deluxe.
Think that one just takes up more room in the V Control cavity.

I'm in OZ bro  :icon_thumright:  so I know about shipping and the cost of things local.
So I get what I can from Warmoth when ordering a Body or Neck.
Then get the rest from here.

Some things from here (sometimes)
http://www.stewmac.com/

Wire diagrams here ...

And ...
http://www.guitarelectronics.com/

Write out a list of things, and you could get the lot (depending on pickup choice) from Warmoth and Guitarparts.
Warmoth have Seymour Pups, but not the full choice. Guitarparts have more choices.
I use Sperzel so they come from Guitarparts. As Warmoth don't sell them.
Stewmac don't have Chrome sperzels (which I use) closest is Satin Chrome.

To check shipping cost anywhere, just toss things in a trolley. go to check-out and see the shipping costs to you.

I might have some things about here in my magic boxs.  :icon_biggrin:  that you could use.
Depending on hardware colour choice.

When you do up a list I can let you know if I can help with some items.

Cheers neighbour, from OZ  :headbang:

Also, Warmoth Pro not available as one piece.

You'll have to go with the Vintage Modern construction. Also, it will sound better than the Warmoth 'Pro' because it won't have an over abundance of metal within the neck. ;)

True, but it doesn't mean you still shouldn't try to stop your friends from exercising poor taste :) Much of the 1970's could have been prevented had folks stepped in when their friends did what everyone else was doing.

CBS headstocks are ok on Strats, Jazzmasters and other ameobic artforms out of the Fender CBS era. But the straight lines of the V sort of beg something in kind, even if different.

....You present a compelling argument. I must concede.

To each their own, I guess! :)

Hey everyone, sorry for not being on.

Am thinking I might eventually just do a Strat build in the future instead, probably more practical. I may even do something with EMGS so when I eventually end up with a huge pedalboard (someday) it will generate less noise. We will see, it'll be ages before I have lots of money anyway.

Also, I see on the Warmoth site that there is the option for a cavity that will fit two batteries. Is the only advantage of this that it will be longer before the batteries have to be changed?

The double battery box has 2 purposes.  If you put the batteries in parallel, it is 9v that lasts twice as long.  If you put them in series, it is 18v.  If you put a dpdt mini toggle in there, you can do either with the flick of a switch.  EMGs are designed to run at 18v, but can do 27v (3 batteries in series).

Alright, I think I'm getting a more coherent idea of what I will do (though this will not be till the end of year holidays at the least:

I'm going to get an unfinished Black Korina body with Strat top SSS routing (black pickguard) along with a double battery box and do a natural glossy finish myself (can anyone suggest where to order the spray from?). Will combine this with a one piece flame maple CBS styled neck and put the DG20 pickups/electronics in it.

Any thoughts on this?
