A lot of people can reliably be tuned-up, and tuned-down, without even realizing it. I figured out quite some time ago that there are genres where I honestly can't tell the difference between the "spoofs" and the real stuff.
Fat lady in Viking helmet bellowing at the top of lungs then falling on her lover's sword = real opera.

Burgeoningly-tubby middle-age men in black leathers and chains, still screaming about Satan = real heavy metal.

Rap? And Lady Gaga, Katy Perry - comedy. I can't quite say they're harmless, in that they take up a lot of room inside people's heads - and it seems to squeeze out a good bit of the capacity they may have had for independent thought. Alice Cooper -> KISS -> Motley Crue -> Marylin Manson, there's always another P.O.P. artist coming along (POP = Piss off Parents).
