I'm looking for a music buddy to jam with in my area.  Thoughts on how I might go about finding such a person without getting turned into a lamp shade?

craigslist! just offer to meet at a guitar center or something. maybe take your husband (he's into music too, right?). i've only had good experiences with CL, but then i've also only tried to actually sell things too  :icon_biggrin:  but people really do read the other sections. worth a shot.

Ya know, I been thinking the same thing.  And I think, the solution I've come up with may work for you.

I like to play blues and blues rock, southern rock too a little.  Its finding people with your own musical taste thats the issue.  What I've done is started going to a few places, listening to the band, and if they're playing what I like to play I'll go again, maybe to another place they're playing.  I'm not talking about local big names.  I'm talking about "those four guys who been playing for a while and get a gig every so often".  Then ya talk to 'em when they take a break.  And if they seem like a good enuf bunch of blokes (or blokettes), you're on your way to jam buddies.

Thing is - they play because they like to play.  It aint the money.  Playing the gig is just about enough money to make moving their crap and setting up and tearing down "bearable".  They all got day jobs.  They just like to play, and they do play between gigs, at one of their houses, or maybe one of 'em has a storage unit or use of his boss's warehouse on weekends.

Thats about all I can offer ya on that one, but even if you dont get an invite to jam, you're gonna be better off for having seen 'em and see what they're doing on stage.  Not a bad consolation prize.

Craigslist may work for you in your area, but around here it is a place where neandrathals and children go to quibble about BS.  The section on the CL here for musicians looking for other musicians is a serious dead end.  I mean seriously, people put up multiple "RE:" type posts to call each other names and say how much the music you have listed as influences, or what have you , suck. I was doing something similar to what =CB= suggested, but I included local open mic nights as well.  Just talked to people who seemed interesting.  Then a guy I work with quit the band he was in, and we started jamming twice a week, so, I have kind of tapered off my search.  We may be searching for a drummer soon, though, so it looks like back out I go!
