So, I had this crazy idea of putting a Digitech RP50  IN my guitar. I would be nice to have some feedback and some suggestions on wiring, placement, and tips if you have done this before.

                                      -Thanks,

Well - a Variax does not have effects build in. It emulates different guitars.

One I know have done something similar with at Zoom 505II

Manson Guitars have built guitars for Matt Bellamy in Muse with various effects built in (Fuzz Factory and I think an MXR Phaser, midi, sustainer, Kaoss Pad etc). Not very helpful in itself, but I think other people have bought or built similar guitars and posted photos and comments on it. Try searching for it, there are bound to be some how-to's out there :)

Matt Belamy's guitars with the Kaos Pad on the top of the guitar are pretty wild - and it looks sick on stage. But he's kind of a mad scientist with that stuff.

Honestly, I think it might be a cool idea but i don't know how practical it would be. Primarily because I think the only multi-effects processors that are of any quality are much too large to be adapted to the inside of a guitar. I had an RP50 when I was first starting out on guitar and even then I thought most of it sounded aweful. X_x Maybe a Korg Pandora would be better - though I haven't seen or used one since the first time i came across it 5 years ago.

Do you have a particular guitar/model in mind to put it in? Something that's already hollow or chambered would be easiest to work with. I'd try and fit everything on the upper wing of the guitar opposite the standard controls. Where the controls go would depend on the model of guitar. Personally, what I would do would be to have the setting controls inside the guitar so you can program presets, and only keep the "foot pedals" and LCD on the surface of the guitar for on/off and switching presets.

Just out of curiosity, what particular advantage do you see to having it built in? I feel like all it does is limit your ability to switch settings to between songs or whenever you're not actually playing.

When I play, I like to have my own reverb, distortion, and all those other effects at my hands, call me lazy but if your caught on the other side of the stage when you have to switch something on or off your screwed :(

makes sense to me.
This gives me the ridiculous idea of putting a reverb tank inside a guitar. maybe even suspending strings across the inside of a hollowbody. haha

anyway. do you already have the RP50?

You just reminded me of this.  I still want one!

I'd maybe just get a couple of those on-board effects units from GFS - overdrive and delay, or whatever. Easy, no permanent modification, guitar looks stock.

I think it's a little early for DSP processors embedded into the instrument, but it won't be long.  The evolution of the keyboard synthesizers didn't take long once the circuits were small enough & became commercially viable.  The technology certainly exists now, but the commercial viability isn't quite there yet.

Hang on for now.

Alesis has already done it (and discontinued it):

I am the same way.
My real world solution was to have my rack fx controlled via midi from a laptop.
On the guitar it self I have, a phase inverter, gain boost, various filters and a kill switch that can be set to normally closed or normally open.
It works out and I dont have to be near my pedal board every 30 seconds.
