Mooncaster?

So I'm looking at Warmoth bodies, and yea, already fantasizing about a 2nd build when I'm still a week away from getting my tele build body and neck, and just wondering what the story is with the mooncaster? What is it trying to emulate? Or is it trying to emulate anything? Starcaster?

For those of you that have built them, were they and "instead of buying a XYZ guitar" built this mooncaster? Similar to an ES336? Sorry for all the dumb questions about this, just not clear on it from what I see online.

That's not a dumb question. The Mooncaster is basically the same as a Fender Starcaster, originally manufactured 1976-1982. I guess Fender is making them again, now, under the Modern Player line. They're a good body. I think the space for the lower bout switch is a bit skinny. If I were to build one, I'd just put a cover in the back for access to that.

This is what Fender’s ad for the Starcaster could look like back in the day:

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I believe that I have finally justified to the bookkeeper of my existence that the mooncaster is sufficiently distinct enough from the existing guitars in our household that there is merit to it existing.

Can someone that has one please confirm that they have oodles of built in tone and far exceed anything I might imagine? Or at least that they aren’t a dead plywood thing? Bear in mind that I will only selectively listen to positive feedback...

More seriously, y’all that have them love them and have no regrets right? I fell in love with a particular unique choice top for a maple mooncaster and will pull the trigger soonish.

I'm considering a build of one down the road, for no other reason than the different body shape, and would be going in completely blind  :laughing7:

I'll have to start looking into what others here have built, what kind of PU's, tone to expect, blah blah blah. Surprisingly there don't seem to be too many videos out there of mooncaster builds to listen to.
Shame Warmoth cannot do ES 335(6) build parts. But maybe a Mooncaster build can get close?
