Modifying/manipulating one coil from a humbucker

Yes! That's pretty much what this whole thread has been about. :icon_jokercolor:

yeah... i actualy just kinda figured that out after the fact. haha

well.... I will experiment with this soon (and I'll FINALLY fix all my broken instrument cables when i whip out the soldering iron) and try to remember to post my thoughts when i'm done.

So i opened up my guitar in order to attempt this technique, and i found that the wiring diagram on DiMarzio's website (which looks very recently updated) does not match how my guitar is wired. It's a DiMarzio proprietary switch, and they're DiMarzio pickups, so I don't think i would have gotten a wiring diagram from anywhere else. I tried drawing how it's wired in Paint (see below.)

any advice on where to connect a pot in this setup to get the desired effect?

Unfortunately it doesn't look possible to me starting with the wiring in that diagram. :(  In that wiring scheme, if you added a pot/resistor for either the "bridge only" or "neck only" switch position, it would screw up the other two switch positions.

You'd have to rewire the switch like the other diagram, but if you have some jumpers, you might want to add a pot to test it first to see if it's worth your trouble - but things would only work correctly in one switch position.

okay pokay... I guess I can just rewire it to the newer dimarzio wiring schematic and try it then. I'm only really interested in using this for the neck pup, so having it in one position only is fine.

Just an update, in case anyone was wondering; I tried this out using a pot in the neck position and I didn't like the sound at all. I haven't actually tried coil taps with these pickups before, but it just hollowed out the midrange in a way I didn't care for, and it left the highs sounding harshly metallic and unpleasant. This is similar to the results i've gotten with coil taps in some previous guitars that i wasn't happy with. I think perhaps I'm trying to have my cake and eat it too with one setup that will do everything i want it to - in a H-H guitar no less - and it's just not panning out. I'm probably going to try some of Ken's Roadhouse H90's next and see how that goes
