Modding a Tele-heeled neck to fit a Strat-shaped neck pocket

I know it can't be done without modding - I'm just wondering if the modding is worth it.
It seems like it would be as easy as just rounding the edges of the heel, but that might be messier in practice than it sounds in theory.

Anyone out there attempted this, or otherwise have any thoughts?

The part of the tele neck heel at the centre line would need to remain intact, then you need a curve at the heel with a 5" radius for it to fit into a Strat type neck pocket.

I suppose whether it is worth it depends on what access to suitable tools/templates you have and your confidence in the use of them. If you don't have the tools etc a new neck may be more cost effective.

If you have the tools go for it.
If you don't have the tools: perhaps now is the time to buy them and go for it!
Or, do what I would do: get a rasp or file or saw and start hacking bits of wood off until it fits.

Careful use of a chisel will square-off the neck pocket if you prefer that.
And yes, I would consider doing that too. I am very good with a chisel...

Unless you have a super gorgeous top, it's vastly better to fit the body to the neck imo. That's just a flat router template operation.

+1 on modding the body rather than the neck.  The neck can be done, but if the results are not perfect there's no way to hide it. If you recut the pocket in the body the results will be under the pick guard if it has one. Actually, some pics of the neck and body involved would help.    :headbang:

A Tele pocket actually requires a 5/16 diameter pattern bit, where most everything else on a guitar can be routed with a 1/2" bit. Also, 5/16" is real close to the 1/4" shank size, so getting a bearing to fit that is tricky. As a result, they're a specialty bit and you won't find them just anywhere.

Thanks for the feedback - while I like excuses to buy new tools and develop new skills, and the suggestion to mod neck pockets instead of the neck is a great one - for my purposes I should probably just sell the necks when I'm ready to upgrade my bodies, and get necks to match.  Thanks for helping me make an informed decision!
