MIM Strat neck doesn't fit Warmoth Strat body, is this odd?

My Warmoth strat body arrived and I tried a MIM 60's reissue Strat neck I had lying around for fit.

It doesn't fit! The neck seems too wide by a few mm.

I'm guessing this won't be a problem with the Warmoth neck I eventually order for this body, but this surprises me. I assume it's an issue with MIM necks not quite matching MIA stuff, though they should  - any thoughts?

MIM, MIA and MIJ parts are all different. The MIA parts are supposed to be the standard, which says the pocket should be 2 3/16" wide by 3" long by .625" deep (I'll let you do the conversions to real measurements).

Be aware that the neck to body fit is pretty tight; it's almost an interference fit. You might try pressing the neck down in from the top of the body rather than sliding it in from the head side. It shouldn't fight too much, though. If it does, give up. Otherwise, you're liable to split the body.

I had the opposite happen when I got my W neck for my MIM body.  With the original neck I could store a pick on either side of the neck pocket. The W neck doesn't even let dust get in there.

Yes, I find that odd.  I put a W neck on my MIM Robert Cray body and it was a perfect fit.  Could not be better...

I'd bet you half a peso that that's three different "standards" for the MIM bods, not the Warmoth necks.... []guy-with-sombrero-smilie[/]

It's hard to be accurate without calipers, but with a steel rule it would seem that the neck is the tiniest bit too wide. Must have come off a MIM body that accommodated it. Warmoth neck pocket seems to be correct (phew). Case closed I guess.

Make sure you're not trying to insert it incorrectly.
Align the neck over the neck pocket and drop in / down ... as opposed to sliding in from the end.

I have a Fender MIM neck that is a tad wider than the standard 2.1875(2 3/16), it measures 2.1915....When I find a body I want for it, I'll just adjust the size of the neck to make it fit.... :icon_biggrin:

Don't worry, I'm definitely dropping it in from above. My current guitar, I made the body from scratch and there's no way the tapered neck would slide into the tapered pocket!

There's a lot of Godzilla ways and unfortunately it's done more often than you think.
If the neck begins to make a pinching noise on the way down remove the neck and apply bar soap  sparingly to the heel and pocket wall.
