Metalic black... Poly? Lacquer?

I'm getting started on my Bass VI build, and I'm thinking I'll paint this one.  Is there a rattle can solution to this, if I want to go metallic black?

I used a good quality automotive lacquer in a rattle can.  I then top coated with nitro and got good results.  You can use Deft or Stewmac for rattle can nitro.

StewMac and ReRanch also sell some of the more popular guitar colors in rattle cans.

I would go to a good automotive store and pick up what you need.  Most of a finish quality is achieved with the prep and polish.

what type of wood are we talking about?

I did a metallic blue in Duplicolor laquer and top coated with Deft. Came out awesome. :headbang1:

That's good to hear - I have a Strat body I'm planning on doing in exactly that fashion.

That's the combo I used too.  Honda metallic silver.

GM has a killer metallic black for Cadillac.  It looks killer.

Ah, now we're cookin'....  I bought some poplar today, very clear, almost quartersawn.  Planed it and glued it up.  Tomorrow we trace the pattern, and hit the bandsaw!

as long as you prep well rattle can works fine,  Poly is tougher than Nitro .  If it wasn't painted I'd go nitro , but with the sparkle might as well go for something tougher to protect.

Ford makes a nice metallic black called "tuxedo black"  Yamaha has one called " Raven black "  both look killer when the light hits it

Poplar probably will not need grain filled.  Get a good lacquer primer.  The darker color you can get the better.

I'm proceeding with DMRACO's advice on nitro/acrylic.

The poplar is nice, though after sealing it with vinyl sealer and shooting the first black coat, you will definitely see all the flaws!

Grain does indeed need to be filled, and the Behren grain filler wins product of the build award.  This stuff fills completely, and dries/ sands ultra smooth.

First paint coats, a Ford acrylic lacquer black.  I may need to shoot some StewMac black over it, as I just ran out of the Ford.

If you're shooting rattle cans, you'll be surprised at how much you'll go through. There's not nearly as much material in those cans as it feels like. Most of it is thinner and propellant. Buy three times as much as you think you'll need, and be prepared to run out.

Yeah.  Ran out already.  Back to the store...
