When the thanksgiving sale came on, at first I thought wanted to buy a guitar that had lipstick pickups and a Screamin' Demon bridge. The more I thought about it, I really wanted two guitars, one with the lipstick pickups, and one with the SD bridge. This is the one with the lipstick pickups.
The details:
Sperzel Tuners
Alder body with flame maple top
Goncalo Alves Neck with Kingwood fretboard
Seymour Duncan Lipstick for Strat pickups
Wilkinson VS-100 bridge
Pickguard was from Terrapin guitars.
While I was waiting for the parts to come in, I looked up players who used lipstick pickups. One was Stevie Ray Vaughn. His had a sticker of hula woman on the back. That kinda made me want to put a sticker on mine, so I got on ebay and found a mermaid sticker, where the tail of the mermaid appeared to match the turquoise dye of the body. I'm pretty happy with it, although if I ever do it again, I'm going to spray some acrylic or something like that on it to protect it better. I know some people are going to think it's cheesy, but I like it.
Anyway, I wired up the pickups using the Brian May wiring diagram on the Dimarzio web site. This puts the pickups in series, and it makes the sound a little darker, but I still dig it. It's not as bright as a normal strat, It's like a bluesy Red Special with a good bit of twang. I also like the simplicity of one volume, one tone.
