Meadowhawk in the House !!!!

Neck arrived yesterday. Beautiful Ebony fretboard with Mahogany shaft. I thought I would do something different with this and paint or dye the neck to match the back and cover in Nitro. Don’t normally like finished necks, but have polished a few painted ones to feel very good. Experimenting with some scrap mahogany and grain filler.

Also have some Quilted Maple Veneer I’m going to attempt to apply to the headstock to match the body.

Hagwood did you happen to eat a lot of paint chips as a child?

Got the Quilted Maple veneer applied to the headstock to match the body. A little kore touch up to do but turned out pretty good for my first time. Back to the paint booth now for starting the clear coats on the Surf Green Strat.image0.jpegimage1.jpeg

Thanks, I’m excited for this build but still haven’t even decided on a color. I have decided on Seymour Duncan P-Rails with the Triple Shot though.
I had P-Rails (now in parts bin) I wasn't a huge fan. The humbucker was meh, the single coil blade was bright and ok, the p-90 was actually quite good but kind of an idealized P-90 sound. Maybe try before you buy.

Nice, I had p-rails in my first Warmoth build. The p90 coil and both coils in parallel were great!

I love my MojoTone P90’s in the Purple Haze, but I was originally going to put PAF buckers in it until I researched the P-90’s. I guess I’ll have to see if I can find some to test….

@Hagwood I'm curious how thick your veneer was, and if you could give any pointers on how you glued up / shaped.
I have a velocity body w/"ultra high grade" flame maple top in tye-dye blue - ordered a custom roasted maple neck for it and the flame on the shaft is unreal, but the tiltback portion of the neck is very unflattering to put it politely. Quite frankly it looks terrible with the guitar and is basically paralyzing me from finishing it, so I was considering dropping a flame maple veneer on.

Mine was pretty thin, 1/16”. It’s pretty hard to find quilt maple veneer, and that’s about all I could find. I’ve done a little veneering with different methods, but I figured for something this small I would just do it by hand. I have used contact cement, but I just used titebond 2 and clamps. I cut it out by hand about 1/8” bigger all around, then just trimmed it flush with an exacto. Then hand sanded to bevel/round over the edges. Worked great, and thick enough for dyeing, as it was already pretty smooth. This was before cleaning up the holes a little. IMG_9926.jpeg

I saw the exacto and thought "naaa, that can't be thick", but in my wood working world, 1/16th of an inch is still pretty thick for veneer!

When I buy thin-cut veneer it's usually around 0,6mm thick, that's the thickness of the orange Dunlop Tortex picks. There's thicker stuff, too, but 0,6mm is like the standard for thin cut veneer for furniture in germany.

I gotta agree though: Quilted maple is hard to find! I can get birdseye, flame maple or other wood with flames, but I don't know if my dealer of choice ever heard of quilted maple.

Btw.: It looks sooo good Hagwood! 😊

Thanks. I ended up finding it on Etsy. It actually may be thinner than advertised, I’ll mic some tomorrow. It was a 6” x 24” piece so I may add some to my Purple Haze too !
