hello, I am thinking of a maple body (which needs to be finished?) and a wenge/or other non finish needed type top.
1. how do I get warmoth to just finish the maple on the back?
2. how would I finish just the back myself without messing up the top?

You know a maple body is likely to be fairly heavy.

Warmoth finishes are likely to be an all or nothing proposition.

Other choices are to get someone to do it for you or you would need to mask off the area you don't want to apply finish to.

mask off the part where it connects and then tung oil the back?
I am not real concerned with weight
I would really like an all wenge bass, but the cost is more of a concern than the weight.

I was also looking at a minwax poly stain to make it almost black like the wenge---so a poor man's all wenge bass?

If you're interested in going the Minwax route, I suggest checking out some posts by forum-member Fretless - he loves the stuff, and has done some really great builds with it.

If you are going to use Tung Oil and are not spraying I'm not sure what the concern is ?

Masking is a fairly straightforward procedure involving masking or painters tape, and a piece of plastic or paper of some type to cover the broader area of the top again held in place by the tape.
