Lucky streak comes to an end

I pretty much learned (still learning) how to solder doing wiring harnesses for strats and my semi-solid. I was always relieved when they all worked right in the first try. That streak has ended. I put in some time on the semi-solid and went to test it before shoving all the bit in the F-hole and everything worked except the volume. I won't be looking at it until later tonight, so I'm not really looking for advice (yet) but if anyone has a suggestion it might help me moving forward.

This is the wiring diagram I am using in case anyone can point out where the flaw might be: http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=2h_1v_1t_3w

either the pot is dead or the ground isn't connected. the pot will still give resistance to the circuit in these cases but the volume change can be minimal if the input impedance on the amp is high.

That actually sounds like my symptoms. I'm getting ready to look at it again now.

I found this thread (wasn't even looking for it) and using the instructions Cagey gave in the last post of that thread I've determined that the pot is 'open' as he puts it. Once I have it out I'm going to crack it open to see what the inside looks like. I've never looked in a pot before.

I guess I finally cooked a pot. Removing that pot, with 5 grounds connected to it pretty much equals redoing the wiring. I'm going to find other ways to run to ground so I'm not connecting as much to the volume pot.

Just use 'Grounding Lug Washers'  :icon_thumright:

I use Grounding Lug Washers all the time for different situations, specially when there is no too much space.
