LP Wiring > Phase Switch: between Vol. and 3way switch?

Hey there,

Where's the best place to put an out of phase (i.e. out of phase with the neck pickup) switch, for the treble pickup?
The 2 choices seem to be between the pup and the volume pot, or between the volume pot and the 3 way switch.

These are old stye humbuckers with only 2 wires.

Thanks,

always before the pot. the pot is grounded and the pickup has one lead connected to that ground. if you put the switch after the pot you either end up shunting something, or if you separate that pot from the guitar ground you may introduce noise by making the body of the pot hot. the phase switching should be done directly after the pickup.

also you shouldn't do this type of thing with a single conductor shielded pickup cable like on a p-90 or with covered pickups or tele bridge pickups without a separate ground conductor.

Thanks DanO:

OK then ... how's this looking to you?

I only saw it for a split second, then I seem to have been struck by some sort of hysterical blindness...

Seriously, I need someone to check my wiring ...
so
let me know what your complaint is and I'll gladly modify the image to accommodate your needs.

I'll try attaching.

It's difficult to tell from cartoons, but it appears that the pickup selector switch is wired wrong. You may have already noticed this, but for clarity's sake...

This switch is in the center position

Same switch, cocked to one side

You'll notice that the center solder lugs are connected to both sides when it's in the neutral position, but when the switch is cocked to one side, the opposite side is disconnected from the center. So, the center connection is what you take out to the volume/tone circuit. The pickups are wired to either side. That way, you get one pickup or the other, or both in parallel when the switch is centered.

The lug on the opposite side (not pictured) is simply a grounding point. Keeps the switch from being an antenna for noise.

Ok. Now, before you wire anything, gimme some time to draw what you effectively get with that circuit. It's not wrong, per se. Lotta guitars are wired that way. But, you may not like the reality of it.

Excellent ... thank you!
I'm in no hurry.

I'm just dreaming my way into the next one a little piece at a time.
