--OP--

I'm looking to swap the pickups out on my P bass for something more "vintage" flavored. The Quarter Pounders I have right now really aren't working for me too well, and the Delanos Tubby sent are supposed to be super bright and modern sounding.

He suggested Lollar and Nordstrand, but since I'd rather not keep losing money swapping pickups out I'm looking to see if yall have any actual reviews for me on these, or other suggestions.

I can tell you in a month or two when my body and neck arrive.  :icon_biggrin: I've got a Nordstrand set waiting.

that being said, for vintage sounds I read a lot of reviews and it sounded like Nordstrand was the "more vintage" of the two.

I like the Fender Original '62 P Bass Pickup.

I have an '88 AV 62RI P and if this is still the same pickup I say +1. I got some flats on it and this bass has that vintage vibe in spades.

You can't go wrong with a Fralin.

I am also a big fan of DiMarzio's. I think of them as vintage with a little more muscle. Though I'm sure the new ones are good I like the original PAF's - they come up on ebay regularly.

The only P pickup I've ever owned was a Dimarzio Ultra P, but I absolutely loved it and so did everyone else who heard it.

You hit on another big topic here, flatwounds. I really need to pick some up. I'm using coated nickel rounds right now which are pretty nice but I'm going for Motown here.

1000% Nordstrand NP-4

I have several very discerning customers who now swear by these ... and it's near impossible to discern between a NP-4 in one of my creations and the tone I get from my vintage P

all the best,

R

Never played any of them, but by suggestion of Rod (SkuttleFunk) i've entered in touch with Nordstrand about a custom pickup I was planning for a custom bass that I didn't have the money to build and I got really good, serious and interested answers... The kind of guy that you give you trust to go forward on a deal...

It has been more than a year, ain't have the money, but when I build a bass, the pickups are going to be Nordstrand

I've always had great customer service with Nordstrand too, when emailing with questions. But at the moment another opportunity might have presented itself... I'll keep you all informed.

Rio Grande could make pickups that made me literally taste chocolate every time I heard them and I wouldn't buy a set. I had several bad customer service experiences with them when I was trying to purchase their products and ultimately decided they didn't want my money.

My favorite all around flats are Chromes - they are the stiffest of the bunch IMO and have a great bump in the mids. LaBella's are really good too, a touch softer, great tone. DR has started making flats and I like them too, kinda like the LaBella's. I think the best sounding flats are Thomastik's but I just cannot play them. Way too soft for my touch - to me it's like playing rubber bands. If you have a soft attack they do sound the best, but if you're a digger like me it's like playing in mollasses. Not enough resistance. As with all strings I find certain ones will sound best on some basses and not so much on others.

I'm a pretty hardcore Ernie Ball fan so I'll be trying them out first. I've had Slinkys on every bass I've owned minus a short, tragic run-in with some Warwick Red Labels... ew.

I only do DR strings.  They just sound good forever.

As far as pickups, get the Fender '62 pickup.  It's great.

Just annoyed the people at Nordstrand talking about gloss covers on their soapbar bass pickups... Although I was told the investment they would need to do is not compatible with the requests of it (only I asked untill now, so if anyone else wants, please tell them hehehehehe), they answered me very well, like I were a nice guy asking a very decent question and were going to spend lots of money now with them (very far from the truth)...

SO: these guys are nice and I'll work with them when I've money to build a bass, no doubt!!! Unfortunatelly as things are going I doubt I'll have any money to spent this year with cheap things, like a Argentina jersey... imagine a bass

I had the opposite reaction to the Black Beauties. I haven't tried any of their non-coated string, though.

I don't do coated, I just use teh regular medium high beams.  They don't have as much "sparkle" out of the box as, say, d'addario XLs, but they retain midrange harmonics for a long, long time.
