Looking for a balanced P-90 set

I think my next strat body build will be dual P-90's.  Lollar has theirs, which I hear great things about and they sound good on youtube, but has anyone tried the Lollar P-90 Jazzmaster pickups or in combination with a P-90?

Also, anyone have the Rio Grande Barpack P90 Set (Bluesbar & Jazzbar)?

Other thoughts or is their something I'm missing with regards to P-90's?

dont let DC resistance fool you when matching with other pickups - p90's are incredibly powerful

a 7.5k p90 at the neck would match easily a 9 or higher HB at the bridge

I've tried the rio grande jazzbar - pure mud compared to the Lollar. Just get the Lollars, that's what Collings, Nash, heritage and other boutique builders do.

I've tried the lollars, and they are amazing. I've never tried Ken's (Roadhouse pickups), but I still haven't seen anything bad about his. Either one is a great choice, and Ken will make exactly what you want.

Ditto Fralin has an excellent rep -

Never used his p90's but have used the Tele pickups.  Can tell you that the meticulous quality of assembly is very much a work of art with the Tele pickups I've gotten.
Tone-wise... I wanted a Tele pickup that would be sparkly, but... not shrill, have a little more meat to it... got a 10 percent overwind and brothas.. its a nice pickup for a Tele bridge pickup.

I cant imagine his p90's are bad, and they're available in about any winding you like.  May I suggest something like 7.2 and 8.5....on a solid body, and 7.0 and 8.0 on a thinline, based on my previous Gibson P90 experiences....

When I was looking for a set of 3 balanced noiseless P-90s, I looked everywhere. Finally I called Fralin & spoke to....Lindy Fralin.

He custom wound me a set of 3 noiseless balanced P-90s with the bridge P-90 being spaced for a fender bridge for no additional cost. Talk about service.

Imo, you can't go wrong with Fralin or Lollar. But for the love of God please stay away from Kinman, unless you're looking for more hype than tone.

Sent Ken an email on Saturday asking him some questions....and he called me back.  Now that is what I call going the extra mile.  He could have easily just shot me another email and we could have played internet tag.  Ken will definitely be part of my next build.  Thanks  :icon_thumright:

I am gonna be watching this thread as I am on the hunt for a P-90 myself!!!  I am planning a LPJR double cut project with a single P-90, and I want the 'classic P-90 sound'  So an update when you pick something would be extremely helpful.

So P-90's are Gibby's vintage single coil offering.  I was looking at the Seymour Duncan P90 Stack http://www.warmoth.com/P90-Stack-P1024C777.aspx or the Custom Soapbar http://www.warmoth.com/Custom-Soapbar-P1022C777.aspx I was wondering if anybody had tried either of these pickups.  I'm definately not a fan of anything 60 cycle, so I was thinking of one of these 'humbucking' P-90's, but if it is gonna drastically alter the sound and what I am going for, maybe I'll go the  :sad1: simple route and get a simple one wire pickup.  I have a mini switch fetish..... or a push pull fetish depends on my mood while the drill is out  :laughing7: mainly cause I like to be able to switch for different tones and degrees of power the front of the amp is seeing.  I am also planning on an EMG booster (either the 'afterburner' or the PA-2 preamps) with an effects loop (AKA the Jerry Garcia FX loop)  in this guitar.  I am still in the planning stages, I just ordered the guitar kit last night, so this may change a little from now till completion!  Only think set in stone so far is the single P-90 on this guitar.  Hell, I can't even decide between red and TV yellow!

I recently played Troubled Treble's Roadhouse P90s, which he is now selling on his site. They were really great classic P90s, very fat and raunchy while retaining excellent definition and string balance. I think they rate up there with any of the boutique guys, plus they are reasonably priced and he is a great dude.

Thanks for the update.  I'm getting closer to pulling the trigger on the whole setup.
