Locking Nut Mounting

I have a neck on order that is being prepped for a Floyd Rose locking nut.  This guitar is going to be converted to use the Buzz Feiten tuning system, which involves shaving off a small amount of the fretboard at the edge of the nut slot.  To save the installer from having to fill/re-drill the mounting holes, I had the nut shelf done without the holes being drilled.  I noticed that Warmoth drills through the back of the neck to mount the locking nut.  My question is, is there any reason why I can't get two of the shorter screws and drill the holes into the top of the nut shelf, like all of the other Floyd guitars I've used in the past?  I know that they can generally be mounted either way, but is there some structural reason why a Warmoth neck would require the screws to go completely through the back of the neck?  Thanks.

You can do a Shelf mounted locking nut.  The screws all the way through the neck are very common to find, but are more overkill than is needed.
If you look at showcase necks that can have locking nuts you will find that they can be prepped to be hole mounted or shelf mounted.

tl;dr
mounting them either way is fine.

I top-mounted the Floyd locking nut on my Warmoth Soloist. My Ibanez has the locking nut mounted from the back of the neck, and after 20 years, it has never cracked or broken. In fact, I have yet to see a guitar neck that was broken as a result of mounting the nut through the back of the neck.
I still prefer them top-mounted though. 'Just looks better to me, and why remove wood if you don't need to?

I wonder if the heavy-duty mount (bolt through neck) has something to do with worrying about how much torque that mount is going to see over the years as people reef on the locking nuts to change strings?
