I'm still working on replacing the pickups in my Squier 12-string, but I've run into an interesting question regarding the location of the bridge pickup.
The old pickups were a split-coil design, similar to a P-Bass or the original Fender Electric XII, but I'm planning on replacing them with standard Strat-style single coils. However, due to string spacing issues, the bridge pickup will be positioned straight (eg parallel with the neck pickup and not angled like on a Strat.) I will have to make a new pickguard to accommodate this change in pickup type.
So, I'm wondering how close to the bridge it should be; too close and it would have an over-bright tinny sound with no depth, but too far away and it won't really sound like a bridge pickup. I don't have an SSS Strat to compare it with, all my other guitars have bridge humbuckers, so the options I am thinking about are either to put it where the slug coil of a humbucker normally goes, put it in between the screw and slug coils of a humbucker, or put it in between the 2 coils of the old split pickup.
I'd like to try a few different positions, but making a pickguard is quite time consuming, so I'd really rather get it right first time.
Anyway, once this is done, I should be able to start on my actual Warmoth project... woo hoo!
