I recently stained a strat with black express color which came out really good. Before I realized there is Express clear that you can can put over it to give it a nice clear sheen I used a Satin Polyurethane, which came out really good. I sanded between each coat & all that & it came out pretty nice except maybe I would of like it to be a bit more glossy. Is there a way to do this? Buff it out with wax or can I put some of the express clear over it or will that just mess it up.

I don't know what "express clear" is, but unless it's designed to go over poly, you might end up with peeling/cracking/etc.

Satin finishes are produced by an additive in the coating that not only refracts the light differently, but presents a more microscopically broken finish, so trying to buff it out is probably not going to return the results you're looking for. While satin finishes usually don't retain their satin sheen and get a bit glossy through use, it's never really a gloss finish. You could try a buffing operation to see what happens, but don't use wax. Get some fine rubbing compound. If that gets you close enough to be happy, then perhaps some polish will finish it off for you.

yeah I will probably just keep it as is. It actually looks pretty good. I might try some compound but I probably won't I will probably just leave it as is.

There's something to be said for a less-than-perfect finish - you don't worry about it. It allows for a comfort level you can't get with the showroom stuff. Get a perfect instrument, and you're almost afraid to touch the damned thing for fear of harming it. That's no good. Instruments are generally meant to be played, and that involves wear and tear.

A buddy was over not too long ago and we talked about how my collection was getting out of hand, and the ones I mentioned I might sell to thin the herd surprised him. They were the coffee table tops with perfect everything that I'm willing to part with, because I don't play them. They look nice, but what good is that? If you don't play with the thing, it needs to go to someone who will. Otherwise, it's a waste.

yeah I don't keep guitars I don't play regularly. All I need is 2 guitars basically. I put this strat together because I wanted something with humbuckers in it. I love the way Les Pauls sound but to expensive &don't feel comfortable in my hands. Strat with a Boat neck is the only guitar that feels comfortable to me. I may make another strat for a back up. I don't need a back up when giging near as much now because I use callaham bridges & I never break a string now.
