Not sure about the bass models, I've got the guitar version (Variax 500) and must admit they're a lot of fun. The build quality needs some improvement but I managed to make it quite playable. For that price, if you can swing it, go for it, at least check one out first.

Tried it and didn't care for it.  The settings just sounded like slightly different EQ points.  The upright and 12 string models were OK, but still had some odd sonic artifacts on the 12 string.

I've got a Variax 300 and it is interesting.  Convenient for detuning and acoustic guitars.
