Lets play with finishing some Roasted Swamp Ash

He saw the pictures and we are going to leave it the way it is and finish it clear.

I think that's best. Even if he happened to be one of those people who don't care for wood grain's appearance - and they're out there - he could still sell this unit to someone who appreciates that sort of thing and start over with a different piece, rather than waste this one.

For example - speaking of people who don't care for wood grain - somebody had this body made with a Maple cap on a Black Korina carcass, then had Warmoth paint it Blue Ice. I bought it on eBay, and couldn't believe it when it showed up. I expected it to be Alder or Ash under there.

I suspect that's what he expected to happen here, but since it's been roasted the lighter parts darkened up more than Ash usually does, so the wider contrast isn't there.

Like my Gibson R4 Gold Top. I know that thing is loaded with flame under the gold. You can see it under the finish in certain light and inside the horn where the maple is exposed. I have been half tempted to strip and re-finish that thing but I really like a 54 style Gold Top with P90's and wrap tail, I think it is a classic look so I'll leave well enough alone.

I suppose to be fair, we have to allow that just because a piece is rare or has some rare quality, that doesn't mean it's automatically attractive. I have an old PRS-style VIP with a curly Maple top over a Mahogany carcass that's just not attractive at all, so I put a solid color over it. The Mahogany had a what looked almost like a huge knot in it, and the Maple was not only not as curly as one might hope, the bookmatching I'm sure they did when cutting the pieces didn't survive the carving, so they looked like radically different pieces. Whaddaya gonna do?

At least with your LP, if it turns out the top isn't as attractive as you'd hoped, you can just shoot it gold again, since you were gonna have to shoot it again anyway even if it is pretty.

First, nice move on the finish of this body.  I mean in knowing what your customer needs, not what he wants.  It's just beautiful.  I love seeing wood grain on just about any body.

Second, awwww, c'mon.  I was hoping to see a trans blue or black/brown/yellow burst or something on a RSA body I've not seen yet.  I mean, if your gonna play, let's play.

Third, if you do decide to refinish that LP, at least you have the experience to drive that boat anywhere in the lake you wanna go.  And a captivated audience.
