Les Pauls With Floyds

So although this would be well in the future (low on funds, and carved top LP's are expensive!), but I think this is the right combo for me. I've wanted a Les Paul style guitar for a long time, and owned a Gibson BFG LP for a while, but we just didn't get along for various reasons. That AND I really miss having a Floyd.

I realize I won't be getting "true" Les Paul tone with a Floyd, but a lot people say you can't get a "true" Les Paul tone out of a bolt on anyway. I don't know if I completely agree with that statement. I think the body and neck woods have a lot to do with it, along with the scale length. So what are your thoughts on this combo? Blasphemous? Versatile? Mock ups?

I think the white one is pretty cool  :headbang1:

Inspiration:

I'm a big Journey fan, so he's definitely an inspiration!

Here's one I came up with earlier. I've got another finish in mind, but I'll have to contact Tonar.

I'm never concerned with concepts like 'true'; they get bandied about but are rarely, if ever, quantifiable.

There are plenty of Gibson Les Pauls that sound terrible, so 'truth' and tone aren't related.

I've always loved seeing Les Pauls with Floyds, so I say go ahead and do it. That's what Warmoth is for!

Though if you get a chance at a Burny, that's a good option as well!

I usually hate LPs with Floyds but these look really nice I have to say.

PS: My 1000th post :hello2:!

Epiphone makes and LP with a Floyd.  the Plus Top PRO/FX

Gibson also made a LP with a Floyd (as well as coil splits and better fret access). ESP make quite a few of them in various price ranges. Kramer have started making some cheap ones which will hit the market soon.

It's really not actually all that new or radical and you can still get the signature thick LP tone, both with a Floyd and a bolt-on neck. You just have to be that bit more careful with your choice of pickups and it helsp to deviate from the norm. Using 300k pots for both volume and tone helps a lot. Slightly more overwound than usual pickups will help, especilly in the neck position and don't bother with anything ceramic - Alnico 8 would be a better choice to balance out a Floyd. Putting GraphTech's string saver saddles on the bridge would help soften the tone a little, as would having a non-recessed Floyd instead of a fully floating one. A chambered mahogany or korina body is almost a must. Hell, stick an all-rosewood neck on it and you'll end up with a much warmer tone than any standard set neck/hardtail LP would have.

No matter what odd build you make, there are ways to compensate for everything. Vintage tone on a modern guitar, modern tone on a vintage guitar, humbuckers that sound like single coils, single coils that sound like humbuckers, different woods, different combinations of woods, different types of construction, piezo systems, different bridge saddles, control pots, neck bolts, nut materials, you name it. A little careful planning is all it takes.

That said, if you do want something as straight forward as a normal LP but with a Floyd then if I were you I'd save myself the hassle of building to compensate and just buy the Gibson/ESP/LTD/Epiphone/Kramer version instead.

Neal Schon is a douche. He tried to kick Santana out of Santana. Anyway I have a friend that has a Les Paul axcess Custom that is so effin bad a. The only other one like it was made for Alex Lifeson. The coa calls it a standard but it is definitely a custom. I want to break into his house and steal it.

I've always loved the idea of Les Pauls with floyds, same with fender strats. Damn shame I can't be assed with floyds anymore haha.

If only there were a vibrato system that acted like a floyd, had none of that locking nut gayness so I could change tunings, looked like a floyd with none of the dicking around when it comes to changing strings and intonating. Floyds are cool, but holy crap, the time you waste trying to make them usable is ridiculous.

I wonder about that actually, ya think that'll just drop into my my existing floyd rout? If so, i'm gettin one cause i'm sick of it.

Edit: Just looked at the site, the measurements between the stud holes in the baseplate are the same b ut i'm not sure the tremolo block is gonna fit.

Well, I got the thumbs up from Tonar! I have a bad habit of getting a new "greatest idea ever" every few months, but I think this one will stick. I've wanted a Les Paul since I started playing, And with a non-recessed Floyd I think the tuning trouble will be kept to a minimum. I change tunings every now and then, so a recessed floyd could only be trouble... Plus the non-recessed will make string changes less of a hassle because I definitely know where Wana is coming form on the Floyd troubles. I'll never forget my first string change with one...

Anyway I've got a couple more questions for Tonar regarding finishing the neck as well and costs for that, but I'll make way too many mock ups of my real finish idea and post them up here shortly.

Here are the mockups I made. Gibson had an SG with this finish that I fell in love with when I first started playing. I remember they kept it high on a wall at the local Guitar Center and I would go in and drool over it. Definitely one of the cooler finishes I've ever seen! Looks to just be a standard burst, but from the bottom up instead of from the outside in. I forgot all about it until I was playing with the Frank Montag guitar builder and fell in love with it again.

I'm still undecided on the top wood though. I'd love plain maple, but since Warmoth doesn't offer that I think I might ask for some low grade flame maple, or maybe just say flame and see what I end up with. Then on the other hand I can't think about Warmoth LP's and not think of Hannaugh's blue LP and that awesome quilt on that. So it's a good thing I won't have the money for this thing until after the summer! Anyway, two mockups. Flame maple vs quilted, and covered humbuckers vs open. Might even want a P-90 in the neck, I really loved that tone with my old Gibson BFG.

i have 2 les pauls with a trem, either sound more like a les paul than any gibson I've tried, but ok.

the thing is. I have a yearning for a floyd' les paul, but the moment I play my non-floyd-tremequiped les pauls, I realise why a trem is not for me. I'm too childish to be granted a floyd. I do whobbles and divebombs ALL the time. it doesn't only annoy the listener, but me in the end too.

I am thinking, though of having a set of les pauls with floyds. one in koa, one in my favorite finish on flamed maple.

but then again? why? I have 15 warmoth les pauls, this friday it will be 16, and 4 custombuild les pauls, so 22 in total (including the gibsons). I like to build, and I like to tinker, but it has to make sense, in a way. doesn't it?
