Lefty Jazzmaster: Let there be sound!

Yeah, the Mastery is pretty great.

As for the sound of the thing, I pine for a producer in my signature because recording good sound is like a black art, to me.

In the capacities where I've played drums, they've required no mic-ing. Small enough venues where the sound of the kit is enough to power through the mix and fill the room. So, I don't have any experience there with twiddling knobs and adjusting sliders, etc., etc.

With guitar, it's always been "plug it in and play" ... a bit of twiddling here and there, but I've only just entered the age where I don't crave head-crushing distortion, so I'm searching for that delicate balance between clean and, when I want it, enough dirty to give it some raunch without completely distorting the sound.

As Cagey pointed out, I failed spectacularly in that regard.

The Line 6 UX-1 and Pod Farm have been brilliant for me in that regard - it's certainly a lazy/cheater's way to do things, but to have a noise/latency free interface and very compelling mic'd cab sounds (let alone amps and effects) without the overhead of having to actually own any of the gear it's fairly faithfully reproducing is pretty win for someone of limited means/space/ability to be loud.  It's not like I lust for the gear any less, or wouldn't want to play through a real rig in an actual studio if I had carte blanche - in fact I think it's a pretty strong sales pitch in terms of a way to test drive a lot of popular gear, but also a nice tool to work out the sound you want in advance, and even DI the clean guitar performance and re-amp it later in said studio to make the most of that studio time.

Disclaimer - I say this as though I'm remotely driven, when I haven't really tracked a complete guitar or bass idea in forever, and really just use the setup to noodle & play the three Dave Gilmour licks I know.

I saw a video for the band Switchfoot ... I think it was related to football, since that's the only thing I watch on TV ... and one of the guys was playing a vintage white Jazzmaster with a tortoise pickguard. Made me want one.  :sad1:
