Whereabouts might someone purchase a set of reproduction left handed Kluson Deluxe "Double Row" Tuners?

6 individual, not on a plate. Like the ones pictured below, except lefty.

Google Shopping and eBay searches turn up nothing.

Hoping to avoid: prying the backs off the rightys to flip the gears... and destroying them. :tard:

WD has them with the bolt bushing. Probably not what your looking for. I have some gotohs with nothing on the back that came off a custom shop lefty strat if you want them.

I asked a couple places that carry the RH double row tuners, and they told me Kluson (WD Music) doesn't make LH individual double rows. They could order the LH 6-on-a-plate double rows (which they said are for Gibson and wouldn't fit), or the LH individual single row tuners (which are older and wouldn't look right on a '66 Fender.)

So... um, how hard is it to pry open Klusons and flip over the key/worm gear?
Do I need to apply heat to soften up the metal tabs first?
Will the heat discolor the nickel, or burn the grease out of the gears? :help:

you should be able to pry those things open at least once without breaking them, the heat thing depends on what the covers are made from, if the covers are coper or brass you may be able to heat them with just a cigarete lighter or candle, if they are steel then you'd likely damage the plating before you got them soft, but if you heat the tabs before and again after you remove the cover with a lighter it might maybe relieve a small amount of stress and prevent breakage.

I got the right-handed Kluson Double Line tuners in the mail today and decided to flip 'em, without applying any heat.

The tabs looked pretty thick and I was afraid of breaking one off, so I thought I'd enlisted the help of my dad, a machinist.

I also thought, why not snap some pics for the learning forum while I'm at it.

I now present: How to flip a set of Kluson tuners from R.H. to L.H.

The first step is to get under the tab closest to the string post with a small flat screwdriver, using the post for leverage.

Gently twist the blade of the screwdriver to pry the tab up. Not straight up, but enough for the back cover to swing open.

kdlflip2.jpg

Then, using a pliers (I call the big one Bitey) push the first tab through the plate.

kdlflip3.jpg

Wedge the back cover open slightly with a screwdriver, bending the second tab up enough to get under it.

kdlflip4.jpg

Once you've opened it this far, you can push it back down and begin prying up the second tab.

kdlflip5.jpg

A small pliers, or wire cutter if you're careful, won't mar the plating as much as the screwdriver.

kdlflip6.jpg

With the two tabs now bent back, work the back cover & tuning key off.

The open back, righty...

kdlflip8.jpg

...now lefty. Make sure to keep the bushings on the inside.

kdlflip9.jpg

The keys fit either way because the covers are symmetrical.

kdlflip10.jpg

Line the tabs up with the slots and press it back together.

kdlflip11.jpg

Use the large pliers to bend the tabs back into place. You can protect the stampings on the back with a rag.

kdlflip12.jpg

The covers are on tight, and it turns as smoothly as the untampered machine head.

Just do these steps 5 more times and you're done. :)

Pops said the metal was surprisingly mailable and thought it could be brass.

Why they don't sell a left handed version of these, I'll never know. They're the same parts, just assembled differently.
