That wasn't me. It was my band's guitar player. I told him I saw it and posted it on here. He asked what I thought, implying that it was far from perfect. I told him although I was impressed and it was something that I couldn't do, I'm familiar enough with his playing that I know what he was trying to do. I admired how he tried to get several tones and techniques in there, as well as elevate the energy. I thought the end snuck up on him, he agreed. He would've liked to have ramped down the energy a little more slowly and evenly. He said they had about 17 or 18 backing tracks, all in the key of C.
A friend of his, who he considers to be one of the best guitar players in the DFW area, he purposely entered on a different day so he wouldn't have to fight him for a spot. This friend is more of a free-form funk guy that can do Blues but it isn't his passion. He's doing it for the possibility of free gear. On the friend's video, several times he goes into an Eric Johnson type auto-pilot and has effortless fluidity. In this case, the friend is definitely the better guitar player, but not necessarily a better Blues player, IMO. I'll try and post it later.
I asked about the amount and level of the other entrants. He said many were "kids" that knew licks but didn't really know Blues so they ran of stuff and kept doing the same Stevie licks. He said one guy that advanced with him didn't even know about the contest. He happened to be at GC, entered, and played a Squier he pulled off of the wall.
