Joe Bonamassa in Phoenix

I've only ever heard one Joe Bonamassa song and it's his take on "The Ballad of John Henry".  I should get around to checking out more of his music one of these days since I really enjoy the one song I have heard.  Lots of times at work I'll be chipping away at pavement with a pick ax or a sledgehammer and I get that song in my head. I'd be hard pressed to find a better song to go along with tedious blue collar labor.  Anyway this sounds like a discussion I have with people who like Clapton way more than I do (too overly reliant on that pentatonic scale for my taste).

Maybe a little, but the way I describe Joe to non-guitarist musician friends is "Take Eric Clapton, and make him ten times better"  :)

In fairness, as far as we know Joe Bonamassa has consumed WAY less heroin.

I believe that's true. My understanding is that the less heroin there is in your life, the better off you are.

So we're not going by the "No Junk, No Soul" clause anymore? Time to re-think my plan for achieving musical brilliance I guess....

Well, now, let's not be too hasty. Read your rider. Your manager knows what's best for you.

Here is something for you gear aficionados...

Edit, updated with the correct link...

Imagine how good Quo could sound if they actually plugged in them gi-tars! Also, just my two cents, but there's nothin' wrong with Joe Bonamassa; He works hard to put on a good show, he's passionate about the music, the gear, and the playing, and he's achieved success  on his own terms in a blues-weary world.
Can't knock that, whether ya wanna go see him or not...

Absolutely, well said...

The Quo video was a copy paste error. Link updated above...

Happy that you could get to see him. I like him but to me he sounds too much like his heros. He need to start listening to Botswana metal or Japanese prog or Turkish folk music so when you hear him he will have that move or lick that makes you think Where the hell did that come from.
I like that he is a gearhead but I get the impression from him that if the gear is not at least 40 years old why bother.

I can only speak for myself, but I'm not necessarily of the opinion that a players foundation and influences need to be obscure or esoteric to be interesting. Yeah, he's a blues guy, not a neo-classical finger wizard, but it's not like he's up there demonstrating the "Play The Blues With Just 4 Notes" technique, the dude has  chops. There was plenty of "Wow" in his performance for me.  :dontknow:

Whereas Yngwie, is a neo-classical finger wizard who essentially created the genre and folks say similar things about him. Like it's all the same or he doesn't play jazz. Even when he has put blues type stuff into his playing in his own way, then its not authentic blues.

Too many armchair critics in the world if you ask me.

I admit I was surprised by all of the criticism. But, to each their own. I'm continuing to enjoy working my way through Joe's catalog (which is pretty extensive) and will certainly strive to be there the next time he plays a venue near me.

Well I will say I really like Joe Bonamossa's voice a lot and well everyone is looking for something different in a player. I had a reply ready but I would rather have more friends than adversaries so I will leave it at that. I would enjoy the show myself if I were there so I don't want to make hard feelings over something we both like  although at different degrees.

Anyways I did see Travis Larson two weeks back his band as awesome Jennifer Young gotta be my favorite bass player.

No need to worry about adversaries or hard feelings on my account, I'm not one for taking things personally. I was simply pointing out where I disagree with your assessment, just as you were pointing out where you disagree with mine. I think it's all been civil.  :eek:ccasion14:

I'm not familiar with Travis Larson, but the description on their website ("Advanced Instrumental Guitar Fusion") sounds like something I can get behind. I'll check them out!
